Title: Wanted: Very current navdata.db3 database
Post by: apjwright on June 29, 2010, 05:34:30 AM
I've been absent from the forums for a while, but am back to using my 'magic' box and am continually frustrated by the quality of data in the aircraft table.

Does somebody have a reasonably/very current navdata.db3 file that i could get my hands on - particularly for civil/commercial and biz-jet aircraft types?

I'm at LHR at the moment and finding that there are a lot of aircraft that are not in my database - and a good number of them are not particularly new ...

Thanks,
Tony

I'm guessing that we must be getting close to the point where all the efforts of the updating team are packaged into a downloadable database for everyone to use.

That would be great - if known, can somebody provide a date as to when a solid database will be available?

Thx.  Tony

No-one will give you a date, it will be ready when it's ready.  The problem with issuing a release date comes if that date is missed and everyone then starts to get more anti than they usually are.

Like Dave said, the update team should be somewhere near to offering the masses a long overdue workable database.

No chance of this (these) databases including routesI suppose?

As I write I am taking an instant random screen shot to show the current extent of the problem. (attached) I know Airnav are constantly stating that they have the matter in hand but, far from improving, the problem seems to be getting worse. What's the point of a screenfull of mystery flights?

A very exasperated John.

apjwright,

Are you connected to the internet at the same time when using RadarBox? The database should update on new entries and you should find the vast majority of Heathrow traffic should be covered fine.

However we do understand there are some issues with the database and apologise the database updaters team are doing a great job in correcting them. Dev team is also working on trying to resolve the update procedure to your local database.

bratters,

We have a linkup with FlightStats to get route information, the major carriers who are not using alphanumeric codes (i.e BAW777) rather than (BAW78G) should be covered in this as well. We do understand the online route database does need a refresh and this is being worked on.

Regarding the alphanumeric codes, there is nothing at the moment we can do regarding this, and its in the hands of FlightStats to whether they can work out the lookup tables (not easy in many cases)

And if you do have an Internet connection while you're at LHR, feel free to use the LHR ADS-B arrivals website at www.civilaircraftregisters.org/Mode_S_Resources/LogReport/EGLLADSB.asp.

You will find that the database that drives it is pretty up-to-date :-)

That can't come too soon Airnav because no route information means no Airport advance notice which kind of defeats the object of the exercise for me.

It's a shame about these database concerns.  In all other respects I find Radarbox works brilliantly (moreso since I put up a decent aerial!!) and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
However IMO before we even think about MLAT or any other innovations, the DB updating situation has to stabilised.

Thanks for your earlier reply.

The refresh by the way, will only refresh entries which have changed from Flightstats. So if your not seeing entries for routes at the moment its unlikely they will appear after the refresh.

Bratters et al

I asked a question at the beginning of the month about the route part of the database.

To cut a very long story short, Marpleman replied (and this is verbatum):

Can I also stress, that as a team (at present) we are not looking into route/flight ID information

Air Nav are quoting in post number 5 above that the route database is being worked on, who is correct?

Looking forward to your answer.

This was the party line as of a few weeks ago, AFAIK it hasn't changed:

As you may already know we signed up an agreement with FlightStats.com to share route data (at large expense to answer DaveReid), so hopefully sooner or later we will be able to get these routes coming through. Unfortunately at the moment is another manual job scenario.

I appreciate AirNav going to the trouble to reassure me personally that they are spending lots of money on it :-)

Southwest,

Not sure where you have read that we said we are working on the routes database?

I think this is the statement that's being misinterpreted:

We do understand the online route database does need a refresh and this is being worked on.

Thats just a refresh from the Flightstats database as explained on answer 8. It does nothing extra than get the latest routes from those which are outdated.

The whole issue at the moment is not about old routes being shown but routes not in the database due to the alphanumeric lookup.

Exactly so - and considering the number of airlines involved, this is rapidly becoming a major issue.

We look forward to your progress reports.

I've got a file with over 82k's worth of frames that is pretty up to date that I'm happy to send you. PM your e-mail address.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for sending me your navdata.db3 file.
Unzipped it and it comes to 19,587 kb,not the 82k.
May be compacted ???? Mine is a similar amount so no need to change.
Thanks again.

Mike.

Presumably Dave means 82,000 aircraft, not 82,000 bytes !

Mike,

Dave Reid is quite correct - 82,500 aircraft!!! I must admit that I was suprised when you said that you only had just over 20,000 aircraft in your file in your e-mail to me.
