Probably a muppet question, but how are squawk codes allocated please?
Dave.

Air Traffic Control allocate a squawk code to a flight before it departs or sometimes in flight. The code gives an indication of the destination, routing or purpose of the flight. Each country's air traffic control has its own list of squawk codes it allocates. The only one that I've found freely available on internet is for the UK at http://www.nats-uk.ead-it.com/aip/current/enr/EG_ENR_1_6_en.pdf (http://www.nats-uk.ead-it.com/aip/current/enr/EG_ENR_1_6_en.pdf) (Paragraph 6).

Google ORCAM Eurocontrol for lots of info on how squawk codes are coordinated across Europe.
