Hi All,
I have noticed over the past week that each time I start ARB, it is taking longer and longer for My Flights to be populated and shown on the screen.
This may seem pedantic but it can be anything up to 1 minute before the flights are displayed.
Bear in mind that we don't have major traffic down here in South Africa with probably at most 15 aircraft in My Flights folder at any one time.
The interesting thing is that the RadarBox itself flashes all the correct lights as soon as the Start button is pushed but it takes a while for the My Flights to be populated.
Any ideas?

Same here.

hi.
Everything A1 here, great new software.

-
Overhere also abt. 1 minute, with 150 flights, so nothing to worry i think..
-
I noticed that bell407 and regardless of the number of flights involved. Last night just half a dozen for instance.
Had to glance across to check RB was blinking. Very new this - last two or three days.
Not a problem of any consequence but a behavioural change. By coincidence??? I have just upgraded my AVG free edition. Possible connection?
-
Possible anti-virus issue. Sound like you anti-virus software may be scanning the RB databases as they're opened. Make sure you've excluded ANRB folders from you anti-virus checking.
-
ANRB folders were on the exclusion list individually by v. numbers. Totally forgot about additional v3.08. Cheers tarbat.

Hi, I have been having a similar problem with 3.08 beta. I have gone back to using 3.07 for the time being, but to do this without having the same slow start-up poblem, I had to do a completely new install of first the original software off the cd and then a new full install of 3.07 beta as downloaded off the forum.
Has anyone else noticed a problem? I am using ClamWin anti virus software and cannot see anywhere in that software to exclude checking of ANRB files so I am not sure that this is the problem.
Any suggestions welcome.
Rgds, Dave

my box shows no flights ..internet connection fine all lights lit up on navbox... im in the uk .. i read the system is down...
this maybe the norm then...

The network is down at the moment but you should still see direct flights on your MyFlights list. Click the box.

I've got the same problem with 3.08. It takes a good 30 seconds if not more to get going.
No problems with V2 though.
-
I have also noticed a slowness to start.
From clicking on the icon to a/c on the screen 40 secs.
From window opening up on screen to a/c on screen 25 secs.
All of my files are excluded within my virus software.

Two random samples for each version from hitting Start to My Flights beginning to populate list:
Version 2 - 6 seconds and 5 seconds
3.01 - 6 seconds and 6 seconds
3.07 - 53 seconds and 35 seconds
Definitely slower to start working.
-
Hi All,
Interesting reading - will keep an eye on how the programme functions in the future. Appreciate the discussion and input.
Cheers,
-
My box takes around 2 minutes from pressing the desktop shortcut to the start screen coming up. From pressing the start button till the first aircraft came up on the screen was between 5 and 10 seconds. Using 3.08 but not concerned about start time, life is to short to worry about some things.

A lot of this depends on your database size. RB does a check to make sure its not working on a corrupted database.
If your database has been gaining information for a years it will be slow to load up. There are functions in the mylog interface to clean out old flights which might improve the loading times.

But my databases are pretty empty to say the least!
-
Check AVG settings as well, that was a main culprit in the past slowing down loading.
-
Hi
I always get this slowness too and I have exceptions in AVG so I don't think it's anything to do with that, I have no corrupt database and a very new PC. I have noticed that when I start the application the message "Contacting server for weather information" appears and once this weather information is received then the My Flights list populates as quickly as it should do.
-
I know I'm normally the one not seeing the same problems as everyone else, but I'm not seeing a startup problem. Back in June, I reported a startup time of approx. 50-60 seconds - see http://www.airnavsystems.com/forum/index.php?topic=2855.msg25526#msg25526
My v3.08 startup times:
31 seconds for the logon box to appear
another 18 seconds for aircraft to appear in MyFlights
Or 43 seconds total startup when using the /connect parameter
So, if anything, a slightly quicker startup in v3.08, but not enough to be significant. Makes me wonder why others are seeing this problem - must be PC specific.
I only startup RB about once a week, and then leave it permanently running. Overnight, I put the PC into hybrid sleep, and RB continues running the next day when the PC comes out of hybrid sleep.
-
The software also puts stuff in memory at that time to make the process quicker when its actually running. If there is already lots in your memory then a bit of swapping occurs which slows things down.
Overal we are not that fussed about the load time unless its really long. There are things it does have to load and check and I don't think we can speed it up without causing issues.
Maybe something for future versions but not for Version 3 full build.
-
I'm not really fussed about it, a couple of minutes is nothing to worry about. V3.08 takes around the same time as V2.01 was so I dont see any significant change.
As far as I am concerned the box is a superb piece of kit and I dont know how I managed alll those years without it.
Keep up the good work AirNav.

Hi
From click Icon to Validating Mylog.db3 complete 4 minutes 30 seconds. I can live with this but my whole computers slows down. Gets worse the longer it is open. I have set not to share data or download photos but no help. Photos still download.

Dudley,
Remember that any photos that have already been downloaded whilst you have had 'download' selected are saved to your hard drive and will be visible even if you are not connected to the Internet.

Allocator
Thanks for that. In bottom right there is a caption All photo/Info requests done. This changes to indicate downloading is taking place.

hi all
Honestly some people are making mountains out of mole hills here, we are talking about 5 to 30 seconds in some computers at the most, but i can see certain individuals on here trying to stir up trouble. (of course not rocket science to work out who it is)

Now the network is back MyFlights list loads almost instantly when it was dlayed before. Great.

Same here, almost immediate list population.
But I do have a question.
Why did we experience delays if Share Flight Data, Photo and Route populate are all off when the network was down? And why does the status bar show Photo Processing requests when I have turned them off?

Weather / QNH lookup.
And why does the status bar show Photo Processing requests when I have turned them off?
Registration lookup.

Totally confused by this. Are we talking about the same problem. How does 30 seconds at the most equate to my problem of 4 minutes 30 seconds. I have asked the system to delete old data over 5 months t but this has not changed my total aircraft of 16000 plus.

I think that this comment was not taking into account that the server has been struggling somewhat before it fell over completely, I suspect that is what led to the times you are stating.
Personally both 3.07, a later 3.07 update and 3.08 have all been pretty slow to start for me since at least the last week or so, however I expect things to be much more rapid now. I'll see when I get a chance to test later.

4m30s sounds excessive, and would indicate a problem in my opinion. Possibly anti-virus.
Deleting old data in MyLog only deletes the flights, NOT the aircraft.

My AV setup excludes the whole directory tree where the Airnav software resides.
It hasn't made any difference to the start up time that I can tell, I monitor the process CPU usage and AVG was not much in evidence. I deliberately waited until all the startup programs had initialised before checking the CPU load.
I think it will all be back to normal when the server is fully functional, but adding a status indicator that is a bit more explanatory of what the program is trying to retrieve would help.
-
Airnav, Im having a problem with Auto-populate. It doesnt work? im connected to the net and dont have AVG running. The flight refects on the Gatwick Aviation website data, and there is also a picture on airliners.net?
Is there a problem with this at the moment?

Tarbat
Now we are getting somewhere. I have had exceptions to excluded Air Nav Systems for sometime. I have now set to exclude air nave data as well. Load time now less than 2 minutes.

Can I remove AVG. I am with NTL and believe they protect my computer.

Not sure about everyone else, but I'm talking about the time it takes from pressing 'Start' for flights to appear on the radar.
I was on 2.0(something) when it was near instant, then using 3.08 gave 30+ second delay.
Not much of a big deal to me but it may be/have been something obviously simple the devs to nail.
-

Strongly recommended that you don't, they do not and cannot protect you for the very reason that the only way to ensure that would be to avoid routing any traffic to you.

Switched from AVG to Avast antivirus over the weekend, but still had slow startup with ANRB v3.08b
Just found the 'exclusions' tab within Avast and duly excluded my entire ANRB directory. I think my old AVG exclusion was just excluding the anrb.exe file and not the whole directory...
Just started RB up (after this tinkering) and from clicking the ANRB icon to seeing the first flight appear in MyFlights took 46 seconds.
45 seconds to validated my databases, etc etc and get to the start window.
Then 1 second to populate MyFlights with the first flight and show it on the radar screen.
A major improvement - with AVG I was looking at a five minute startup time. Possibly me being ignorant as to how to setup exclusions within AVG properly?
As for one second for first flight to appear - thats amazing considering my indoor standard ANRB antenna was indoors and well away from my groundfloor window...

Hi
Deleting old data has taken my log from 196336KB to 2784KB. This is bound to help. My 16000 plus aircraft remain as indicated by Tarbat.
