Hi,
Can anyone give me a rough idea of what military stuff I can expect to pick up on my box.
I know that most will be picked up in my flights & go into my log but will not give their position on the map.
I was hoping for some advice about a few individual types ie the more frontline stuff - I do see plenty of RAF Hawks - Harriers, VC10's, Tornado F3's in my log (but never GR4's - am I right in assuming they are not equiped to allow the R-box to even pick them up at all).
I know from other posts on here that Typhoons do get picked up (still waiting for my first one ) but was wondering if anyone picks up stuff like the F-15's from the US bases such as Lakenheath ( I do get plenty of the heavy US stuff like KC135's & C5's ).
Any replies most welcome
Cheers

Despite being located near Lossie, I see very few Tornado GR4s, so I believe most are not equipped with ADS/B. In fact, out of 81 Tornados in my log, 11 are GR4s, the rest are F3s.
-
Hi Bat 21,
Like you I see Hawks, Harriers, VC10's, F3's but also a couple of GR4's & GR4A's so your theory might be a bit shaky :-)
A quick scan of MyLog shows also the following RAF aircraft;
Hawker Siddely Nimrod R1
Eurofighter Typhoon
C-17 Globemaster
AWACS/Sentry
If you include helicopters then;
Gazelle
Puma
Apache
Chinook
On the US Mil SIDE then I see quite a few F-15C Eagles & F-15E Strike Eagles and they are notorious for their scary sounding callsigns such as DEATH, GRIM, REAPER, MUGER, SNARL, RAGE, PANTHR, THUD, SHARK, DARK, STRIK etc.
Other US Mil apart from the KC135's, KC10's C5's, even more C17's include;
AF1 & its support entourage
Lockheed F-16
Boeing E-4B
Boeing RC-135S/U/V/W Rivet Joint ELNT aircraft
AWACS/Sentry
A10
And helicopters;
Sikorsky Black Hawk
Chinook
There must be other interesting Mil stuff that I have missed as I have over 14,000 aircraft in my current database.
There's plenty of stuff up there!
Kind regards,
-=Glyn=-

Thanks Glyn & Tarbat,
Re: the F-15's - do they show up as F-15's in your log or is the a/c type left blank & you tie them up from the 6 digit code (or even just know they are F-15's from the callsigns) ?

Here is my UK list.
I'm sure that there will be a few errors in there, but it gives you an idea of what you might see in the MyFlights aircraft list, but not on the map.

Hi BAT 21,
The F-15's started appearing on the box around the 1st of april and they were being tied up slowly, then a few weeks back they switched to using tactical codes like the Germans which makes them difficult to tie up.
There is a bit more info in this thread.

Hi Collin,
Airframes has it as F-ZBPL EC45 of Securitie Civile
Here are a few sources of lookup to try

Hi Again,
Just a note regarding Eurofighters, I have only picked up 5 in 6 months they only seem to use mode-s when they are operating out of Warton. This is just my humble opinion as Coningsby is well within my polar diagram and I've sat in the viewing area at coningsby and picked up zilch.
With regard to Tornado GR.4 they seem to be being reallocated codes from F.3s that have been withdrawn from service
Example 43C156 ZE755 TOR F.3 scrapped 2008 picked up on RB 19/05/09 and reported as ZA598 TOR GR.4
HTH cheers John

Yes, I'm starting to notice this too. I now plan to review my logs, and any Tornado operating below 500ft (in the Tain Bombing Range) MAY be a GR4.
-
Having worked on both GR's and F3's anything below 500ft is definetly a GR. F3's dont like going that low unless the wheels are down and locked!
-
Except in the Falklands :-)
-
Where it was once reported in the local paper that the christmas fly past was carried out by 5 F3's. Funny that we thought we only had 4 down there and one of those was in on a minor servicing.
-
3 in service you are lucky when i went down we struggled to get two servicable sometimes radar failures where a nightmare
-
Leave it in stby, usually helped.

Hi Bat 21,
They just show up as F-15's in MyLog - see attached picture for some of the F-15's I have recorded.
I do no tie-ups whatsoever and the thought of using Database Explorer fills me with horror - those of us who suffer with the slow menu syndrome also have big problems with Database Explorer, MyLog & navigating anywhere within the program - it really is unusable for me...:-(
So what you see is an unedited verison of MyLog - there are also more F-15's listed in there...
Regards,

So, whats a realistic minimum altitude for an F3 (when not landing)?

Thanks again Glyn,
Good to know that F-15's do auto-populate
Looked at my log & found 2 codes that did not auto-populate but according to the Gatwick Aviation Soc looks like they were F-15E's ( AE1799 & AE17A9 )
..reckon these are the only 2 my box has ever picked up ... not too surprising as I am no where near Lakenheath ( 7 miles North of Newcastle airport ) & my R-box is rarely running during weekdays when we may get the odd F-15 over our local ranges.
Cheers

I have noticed that about five of the F-15 aircraft I have listed in MyLog are listed as Boeing F-15 and not McDonnell-Douglas F-15.
I also have around a further 22 ModeS that are a very strong possibility for F-15's although as I said I do not intend to manually input into Database Explorer as it is so crude to work with at the best of times and for me totally unusable due to the delays in clicking on a box to edit and anything actually happening. Even the mouse pointer disappears while it is waiting for something to happen...
I'll be content with my auto-populated F-15 listing for now...I really should get back to work!
Kind regards,

After Boeing look over MD in about 1997. the designation slowly changed over - you'll see the same with C-17's

About right as far as I know. When I worked on the OCU though they didn't usually go below 15K so if the baby pilots got into trouble there was plenty of time to do something about it

I live very close to RAF Benson and not too far from Northolt and Brize, so a good number of Brit Mil overfly. Have 174 RAF and AAC a/c in mylog (Mode S) including over 20 Puma, plenty of AAC Apaches, Lynx and Gazelle, odd examples of Tucano and Boscombe Alphajet and even the BBMF Hurricane and Spitfire!
However I do not have a single Merlin or Chinook unless these are amongst the 14 in the log without serial tie-ups. Anyone know any of the hex codes for these? If not, anyone know why the 30+ year old Pumas are fitted with Mode S and the 5 year old Merlins are not?

some c17's kc135, vip transport, but all the low level mil, that is less than 1500 ft don't have transmit lvl or position so even though i get tens of overflights on my head each day i cannot see them. i live near a nato airfield and a training area run by cubic corporation, with a "playground" for hi lv air to air and lo lvl a air to sea and air to land facilities d39 and r54 areas

You don't get positions because military aircraft, as a rule, don't send the Extended Squitter (ES) with that data.
You don't get levels for a different reason - non-ES aircraft only send altitude if they are being interrogated by a Mode S ground radar, so those that you are seeing in the sky are probably out of range of one, particularly if at low level.

I hardly ever get a mil ac NOT transmitting alt. I get AAC and RAF helis around here at 250' to 1500' always transmitting alt and I have NEVER had a US Mil ac not transmitting alt. That includes F-15s at LN.

As Dave says it depends on your proximity to the Mode S ground radar. Where you are you are literally surrounded by them.

Yes, I'd expect the Debden Mode S radar to see low-level traffic over much of East Anglia.
Bear in mind also that if an aircraft drops below or beyond radar coverage, the altitude shown on BaseStation/RadarBox doesn't disappear, it just stays at the last known value.
