Hi all
I have been lurking on here for a few months now and thought I would introduce myself. Every since my days of spotting at "Ringway" 35 years ago I have spent my life looking up at the skies at aircraft and wondering where is going, what type is it, where is it from. I finally took the Plunge after much salivating over all your polar diagrammes etc and WOW what a piece of kit. So thanks for that Airnav ( you made a 43 year old back into a 13 year old).
I live about 10 miles from MAN, on the flight path too 24R in Stockport.
So I've done it, I'm Finally out of the closet. Next big step is too tell the wife I wear her clothes while she's out..... ha ha ha ha
Happy spotting........ Colin
P.S. The 747 knocks spots off the A380 in my opinion

Welcome Colin, glad your enjoying the RadarBox.
-
Hi Colin enjoy being "out" not sure about the wife's clothes but your amongst friends with the aviation bits. Enjoy the radarbox and the site were you are guranteed friendly advice and banter.
I live in Northern Ireland but love Manchester Airport's Viewing park and get there at least once a year (relatives in Blackpool so good for Warton also). I don't get over anywhere near often enough but it helps. I kinda agree about the 747 and other types as opposed to the younger variety or lack of variety. As you'll guess from that I'm in the older age bracket also (53) but yes the Radabox has added a new spark, actually saying that makes me think what a shame i never really see the wife much these days!!!!
Keep us informed how things are going.
Regards
John

Not sure about B747 vs A380 ...but am sure about the Radarbox having recently aquired one ....sadly after a week it has had to go back for a fault to be fixed but W&S assured me today that it should be back with me very soon....
Marvellous invention - on a par with the first commercially available VHF Airband receivers back in the 60s -when almost all aircraft used their registrations or serials as callsigns(I started looking at aircraft around 1954!)
Now - B747s or A380s - both big - both technological wonders - yes .....
But you ain't seen nothin' if you haven't seen a night take of of a TWA Jetstream Starliner (L1649) pounding down 28L at Heathrow (it was 28 not 27 then!) ........or Convair B-36 at Greenham - "6 a-turnin' and 4 a-burnin'".
-
cheers canonjohns,,,, and as for you dave4otu...... lucky you living near heathrow<<<< what a dream that was in my youth...Jet sream Starliner? i have no idea what this is. Early 707 maybe? that sounds daft even to me.. anyway i still remember the Air France corvettes(spelling?) and the Dan Air Comet 4c's and the tridents........ halcyon days........ oh and LAKER AIRWAYS DC10S all 1 of them
-
Hi dave have to agree that the A380 is different class, really the modern 747, or it has the chance to be. It was the other Airbus types I meant are a bit samey.

And I wonder how many Others want to take on the challenge?? :-)
and that is not wearing the wifes clothing but 747 against 380?
-
I think that the A380 is beauitiful only because its huge and new, but nothing beats a BAW/ANZ 744...(or QANTAS for that matter)
-
Have seen the A380 fly over within yards of my house but it did nothing for me.......... maybe the wrong dress lol.... the 747 MEGAtop for me will not be beat
-
Laker's DC10 and Dan Dare comets now those were the days, not forgetting Courtlines understated colours on their L1011's
-
Nothing wrong with lilac and pink !
Mmmm, nice.
-
Tedloon,There is probably a website for crossdressing planespotters somewhere!
Maybe planejanes???
-
Hmmmm.... 6 pages of Google hits for "crossdressing planespotters".
Perhaps I'm missing out on something :-}

Rod,
As they say don't knock it till you've tried it. Must go home & whip the wife's knickers off, they are cutting into my legs!

And I thought nothing was worn under a kilt?

And I thought nothing was worn under a kilt?
Nothing is worn under the Kilt it is all in good working order!
-
Colin - I didn't live near Heathrow - but every half term holiday (and the main school holidays ) we would catch a Royal Blue coach from Southampton for a day planespotting at "LAP".
A Jetstream Starliner was the last Lockheed Constellation development --- just about the ultimate in prop airliners...
There is picture at this link....

many a fine tune played on an old fiddle,as they say!

True very true, nothing better than the odd fiddle
-
Fiddlers & crossdressers...what kind of forum is this?
-
A friendly one ;-)
-
Dave, I see what you mean about the above. What about an ear splitting VC10 roaring down the runway and clogging up the air with smoke and no do gooders complaining about noise....... happy days :)
-
VC-10....maybe -
But now if you said BAC111 I'd go along with that...(Lived near BAC at Hurn during the 60-90s)
-
Should see the Nimrods, you can spot them miles away
-
How about a late 60's aircraft that would have pleased then even today - Bristol Britannia, AKA the Whispering Giant.
At Liverpool you could NOT hear it even when it ran up to full throttle at the end of the closest runway.
-
If distinctive engine noises are your thing , there are two that I find very satisfying.....
First and top of my list any day - is the wholly distinctive sound of a Dakota....partly at least because I grew up to the sound of them flying over all day long(BEA/Morton/Derby AW/USAF all in and out of Eastliegh in the 50-s)
The second and rather more modern as well as totally different ....the sound of an F-104G Starfighter as it does a curving run past at low level. That sound is totally unique.
-
Props: TU-144 and AN-22, closely followed by the York, the Elizabethan and the Electra
(Dates me a bit)
Jets: Coronado and B-52....or for lots of noise the TU-104 or English Electric Lightning
That's enough excitement for me for one night - back to my window box....

Growing up in Liverpool in the 70s/80s one-elevens, Viscounts and Heralds were the standard fodder for EGGP but the occasional visit of an Air Bridge Carriers Vanguard Merchantman was a rare treat. Can't beat the sound of 4 RR Tynes
-
Having just taken up aircraft photography again, I must say that seeing a 747 on finals to Heathrow beats the A380 hands down...There is just something majestic about seeing a 747 appearing over the rooftops & trees near Myrtle Avenue (spotters gathering point for landings on 27L) that the A380 just does'nt have...Its the same with the 777...just does'nt have "it".
-
Hi my name is Mark and I'm a plane spotter to I have been floating around here for some time now haven't got my radar box yet but hoping to soon when I have enough funds to by it
-
Welcome Mark, get saving you don't kow what your missing
colin

Thanks Colin am already saving I live in Ireland me self about 20 odd miles form EINN/Shannon airport so hoping to get the aircraft coming and going from there also will be on the network so can give you lads a bit of heads up on the stuff coming of the Atlantic if all goes to plan :)

Hi there,
No doubt i will have to duck the bricks and tomatoes being thrown at me for this, having flown on both the 747 and the Megatop, after flying on the A380 as a passenger there is no comparison, yes the 747s are good but the A380s are superb, quieter, faster and yes fly higher, more leg room, more room in the aisles.A tribute to the Airbus Industries designers and workers.
-
Terry,
Lucky you i myself have only flown on the 747 (old ones at that) i did barbados some 20 odd years ago on the imfamos " flying pig" and strangely a flight back from Cyprus 3 years ago which was not expected. On the cyprus flight water flooded from the overhead locker onto my daughter when taking off, the crew said "it's not normally that bad" . It was the air con and thankfully not the upstairs loo.... anyway its not the inside or how it performs that makes the 747 No1 for me it's what Chassi says above.. The A380 will never catch the hearts and minds of the public. Maybe it's just me
-
I live under departure path of LHR so see many B744s and 3-4 A388 a day. B742s are nice but in my opinion the -400 ruined a classic shape. However, IMHO neither of them beat the A346s of Virgin, Etihad, Qatar and Thai etc that I see. These are the most beautiful airliners.
ACW putting his anorak back on the peg.
PS I still am in denial as I still believe I am only an AVIATION ENTHUSIAST.
-
don't get many of the A34's up here in man ACW, however virgin have just started a few flights aweek with the type and they do look majestic, all they need is a big bump at the front lol
