Title: HOW TO ACTIVATE THE MLAT FOR RADARBOX24
Post by: medlege on December 10, 2019, 01:10:54 PM
Hello to all of you !

Please can you help me in order to activate the MLAT for my EXTRPI feeder ?
I have specified the exact GPS coordinates and altitude above ground using the "See instructions" link in the stats page but the MLAT is still inactive.
How to check if the MLAT client is installed ?

Once again thank you very much in advance for your kind help.
Regards.

If it is installed it will state MLAT active on the status.  What is your station number

 Try run "apt-get update -y; apt-get install mlat-client -y; reboot" then setup the Lon and Lat in your station id profile and then will be MLAT ready

Hello Runway31 and thanks for your help.

I followed your instructions but got an error message and could not make it installed.
I am not a linux expert at all and maybe this is due to an old package distribution.
Please see the logs enclosed...
Do you have any clue what to do ?

Regards.

Means nothing to me. just gave advice given on another thread which installed the MLAT..  Jessie maybe an old package that doesn't work with that.

Maybe a Linux guru will pass by with some advice

Yes indeed for my Xrange2 (PGANRB feeder), MLAT is now working fine !

But for my Pi (EXTRPI Feeder) it is still not working.
As you said I have an old debian version...

Hello I am trying as well to install MLAT on one of my xRange devices. I followed the procedure and when I run the "apt-get install mlat-client -y" command it says that the version installed is the last one. I have also mlat-autostart=True in rbfeeder settings.
In the status page, however, MLAT is always off and Mlat Autostart is also off!

Any suggestion?

Thank you

Edit your location using the exact lat/lon for MLAT.  Failing that contact [email protected] and ask them to have it upgrade to MLAT

I note that PGANRB300389 has been offline for a year??

Hei thank you for the quick reply!
Lat and Lon are correct, and the device is offline because I am not sharing the data but I am using them internally to feed a private system.
I am trying to set up a server (mutability) and connect the 4 xranges I have. Apparently I am not able to do so because maybe I am missing something in the configuration of the device...

I would have thought that they would require to be on the Airnav or other operators network to have the MLAT to operate as the MLAT calculations are carried out on the server software not on the unit.  However but I know nothing abut Pi configutation

If you have Raspbian Jessie, it is too old. Please upgrade to Stretch or Buster.

Output of these commands will show your Raspbian version
Code: [Select]
lsb_release -sc

cat /etc/os-release

For detailed instructions for enabling MLAT on RPi, please see this post:

abcd Will installing the  MLAT client be any use if the receiver is not connected to the Radarbox server

Giacomo Regarding warranty the only ones who can answer that are Airnav

Update on my situation: now I have an xRange2 with MLAT active!

Did anyone ever tried to connect to the MLAT mutability server with the xRange? Without feeding radarbox24?
Title: Re: HOW TO ACTIVATE THE MLAT FOR RADARBOX24

As the MLAT software is on the Radarbox server and all the calculations to enable MLAT are carried out there I don't see how you can

For you to have MLAT on your own using only your own receivers not connected to the Airnav server you would need your own MLAT software on your server

I have MLAT running for FA and I believe it is porting to RB, but I am only seeing MLAT aircraft on RB without positions and I don't see "MLAT activated" or anything like that on my station web display. I have the correct lat/long in the config file but maybe I am missing something.

I had it working before but my SC card went about a week ago and had to re-install from scratch.

Any ideas what is missing in my config? Tnx..

Yes you are feeding RB24 OK https://www.radarbox24.com/stations/EXTRPI004730

Unfortunately I know nothing regarding Pi's so I cant help with your MLAT query.  Hopefully abcd will be along to assist.

Have you tried editing your location exact lat/lon via edit next to your location on your status

Yes I input my lat/long in the "edit position" in DD.dddd format. Wondering if that is the issue should be DD,MM,SS or DD,MM.mm? Will try DD,MM.mmm and see what happens. Also a "-" in front of longitude for west of prime meridian.
According to the zoomed-in map it should be accurate, or at least within 20m I would guess.

EXTRPI004730

Your site shows mlat is NOT activated.
To activate MLAT you have to do following two things

(1) Add your location:
Latitude like 49.5615
Longitude like  -97.1543
(above figures are only example, use your actual latitude & longitude values)

(2) Install mlat-client:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install mlat-client

Still no go. Tried to build and install mlat client but still no go. Coordinates are good. Must be another issue somewhere... maybe I'll have to remove the RB feeder and re-install...

@aps

Station numbers starting with:
EXTSHA are Windows Feeder
EXTRPI are RPi Feeder

As your station number is EXTSHA195185, you are Windows Feeder, and as Alan has already told, you cannot have MLAT activated.

I would suggest you ask support for advice as setting the location through Edit is usually all that is required

A couple of months ago my MLAT stopped working for no apparent reason. I have been an uploader since May 2021 and changed nothing. I sent logs and data to support, no response. Anyway I found a post on this site that solved my MLAT problem, I hope this helps someone else. It would appear this is a software problem that has existed for over a year.

Title: Re: HOW TO ACTIVATE THE MLAT FOR RADARBOX24
Post by: Greytech on August 19, 2022, 12:22:02 AM
Reboots is how I kept MLAT running for the past year when it randomly stopped, but no amount of reboots or "sudo systemctl restart rbfeeder" would fix it when MLAT quit about a month ago. I had an error message when running "sudo systemctl status rbfeeder" to the effect:
"File "/usr/bin/mlat-client", line 108, in <module>
adsbexchange rbfeeder[642]:     open(pidfile, 'w').write(pid)
adsbexchange rbfeeder[642]: PermissionError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/run/mlat-client.pid'

This error cleared when I applied the patches in my post above and MLAT then started working. One can now restart the process with "sudo systemctl restart rbfeeder" and "sudo systemctl restart mlat-client", MLAT now happily restarts without a reboot.

@Greytech
That patch was for BUSTER, and worked for you because you have Buster. For those who have BULLSEYE, following is the patch:

To install mlat-client package on RPi with 32-bit Raspi OS BULLSEYE

Code: [Select]
wget https://github.com/abcd567a/mlat-client-package/releases/download/v1/mlat-client_0.2.11_BULLSEYE_armhf.deb

sudo dpkg -i mlat-client_0.2.11_BULLSEYE_armhf.deb

sudo apt-mark hold mlat-client

Hello!
I am new to Radarbox.
I installed RB Feeder and Mlat (Bullsey version with 32 bit) on my Raspberry 4 with OS Bullseye 32 bit.
Everything seems to work fine, except Mlat.
It shows Mlat is working. When I watch it I can see that Mlat synchronize with other stations in intervall and not permanently. I do not know why. When I look to other stations with Mlat it seems they synchronize permanently. Seen on green points on the map. Mine are there for a few seconds and disapear. A few minutes later they will apear again on the map for one minute or so.
Also the amount of Mlat pakets on my Pi are relativ low against others.
I was trying everything what I could find in this forum.
I have no idea what to do, for getting it work permanently.
Maybe the expierienced ones of you will have some ideas what to do?

sorry for my english

Kind Regards
Gerry

meanwhile I have tested FlightAware and ads-b exchange
the best working site is flightaware. there I can see all planes in realtime, even MLAT planes are shown. this is not the case with radarbox24.
the only real advantage RB24 has, is the beautiful look of the site. this is really good made.
But what should it bring when when parts of the software is not working well (mlat) and I can see a delay in data also. Everything compared on one screen with Flightaware and ADSBexchange parallel to each other, Radarbox shown planes are several seconds behind in their location.
As I could see in Forum posts , the problem with Radarbox exist a longer timespan right now and is not to be solved in the next time. It seems that they are not interested helping to solve the problems. Otherwise all feeder deliver data to Radarbox without of cost for them.

Hi there,

My station https://www.radarbox.com/stations/EXTRPI004762 is showing MLAT as active, but there are no stations synced.  I've confirmed that the correct lat/lon/elevation coordinates exist in /etc/rbfeeder.ini and "systemctl status rbfeeder" is showing both "/usr/bin/rbfeeder" and "/usr/bin/python3.9 /usr/bin/mlat-client ..."

Hi
I had the same problem and no one had a solution here for that.
But the solution is very simple!
go to Radarbox Website. In the left upper corner you see your stats.
First line is your stantion number and under station number there is your country.
Here you can change your location data. Click on it and put your correct lat and long.
The important part is the sea level. Do not take any numbers from a map.
Take the numbers what Radarbox interface gives you and click enter.
This was the point in my case.
It takes a few minutes and then it will work. Maybe after that start your browser new.

Thanks gerfie for your kind reply.  I had known about the easy suggestion you gave, so already tried it.  I have been able to confirm that the correct "alt=" value was getting written back to my /etc/rbfeeder.ini file.  No luck yet!

I presume you have both installed the Radarbox MLAT Client?

Can you post your ini file with your personal details deleted

Thanks for your follow-up, Alan.  How can I check that I have the right mlat-client for RadarBox?

I'm unable to post mlat-client version and /etc/rbfeeder.ini info here without being stymied by this web interface's anti-spam misconceptions.

I've attached a screenshot showing this info.  Thanks for any insights you can give!

It looks ok to me but the only observation I would make is that you are using the older Bullseye OS and not Bookworm but I think it should still work

Have you rebooted the Pi after installing the MLAT client?

My Linux knowledge is limited and I hope abcd picks up the thread and offers advice

Please issue following command:

sudo ststemctl status rbfeeder
@AndreasWarby

If in the output generated by above command, you see following line, then mlat is working ok:

/usr/bin/python3 /usr/bin/mlat-client --input-type dump1090 --input-connect 127.0.0.1:32457 --server mlat1.rb24.com:40900 --lat 43

Please see attached screenshot.

@AndreasWarby

(1) You do NOT need any more help. Your system is running perfectly normal.

(2) In Systemd service, every App has a user assigned to run it. That user is independent of OS user like pi. Following users are used for ADS-B Apps

  APP    USER    GROUP
  Radarbox24    rbfeeder    rbfeeder
  Flightradar24    fr24    fr24
  Piaware    piaware    nogroup
  dump1090-fa    dump1090    nogroup

Please see attached screenshots.

Thanks @abcd567 -- my system may appear to be running perfectly normal, and its status page is showing MLAT as active, yet for several days it's also been indicating "No stations synced".

I appreciate your description of the various organizations' moves away from root.root user.group permissions; however, that does not appear related to a solution for my particular problem.

I can see the running "mlat-client" process belonging to rbfeeder using resources on my RPi, alongside similarly running piaware and ADSBexchange MLAT executables.

Other than the initial connection handshake, there are no further traces of rbfeeder's MLAT activities in /var/log/syslog.  I've checked that my coordinates and antenna elevation are all correct.  My system clock is disciplined by a stratum-1 GPS system located on the same LAN, so timing info should be well calibrated.

I am still at a loss as to what is going on.  I had hoped that some of the log file contents in my earlier post (Jul. 11th) might help to shed some light.

Yes, sure. It is a good idea and very easy to try. It will clear any corrupt / broken mlat client .

sudo apt purge mlat-client

sudo apt clean

sudo apt install mlat-client

I appreciate the instructions, thank you @abcd567.  I performed them, but the situation remains effectively unchanged: rbfeeder seems to be working well; MLAT is active and I can see the process working away; BUT, still "No stations synced".

My station: https://www.radarbox.com/stations/EXTRPI004762

For good measure, I again clicked "Edit" on the above page and re-entered my antenna's coordinates.  No luck!

I'm beginning to wonder whether there is a problem on the server (rb24) side of things, perhaps related to the fact that my station was down over the past year while I was overseas.  I note, however, that my friend just set up a new rb24 feed yesterday, and his mlat is working very nicely.

Edit 1700 all back to normal for me with 50 stations synced

Unfortunately, I can no longer reply usefully on this thread due to Cleantalk issues.  I see that the forum software hasn't been updated since 2017, which is perhaps even more concerning.

Bottom line: I've disabled MLAT feeding to AirNav RadarBox.

Post by: AndreasWarby on August 13, 2024, 09:20:48 AM
In my case, I have given up trying to help AirNav RadarBox with my station's MLAT data.  I had contacted support and, after some back and forth as I re-installed the MLAT package and the problem remained, I was then asked whether I am also providing MLAT services to any other organizations.  I replied that, yes, I am providing MLAT for FlightAware and ADSBExchange.  After I sent that reply, AirNav RadarBox stopped communicating with me.

Perhaps RadarBox has gone the route of FlightRadar24, who have explicitly requested that feeders providing MLAT to other orgs disable MLAT to FR24 (which I did)?  At this point, I've been left to guess that RB detects other MLAT feeds and then intentionally disables any synching.  That may protect RadarBox from some bad data, but the methodology (no explanation, poor communication) shows low respect for us feeders.

MLAT has not been disabled and Airnav has not disabled it if you are feeding elsewhere, MLAT seems to be working fine for all feeders with it on apart from you Andreas  They would communicate any requirements to turn off MLAT etc

You just need to look at all the feeders with MLAT set, I myself am showing 47 synced at this time and as you stated a few posts back your friends is working ok,  it must be something wrong with your MLAT client set up

Alan, as a moderator do you represent / speak for AirNav RadarBox?  There is at least one other high-performing station in my area that is exhibiting the same characteristic as mine, namely EXTRPI618751.  The friend that I mentioned does not have the same setup of feeding to other organizations.  Is there a log file I can check to try to trouble shoot from my end?  I realize problems and misconfigurations can arise, but the real lament is with the sudden drop of support that I described.

 I so not represnt Airnav in any way ans am not employed by the,  I update the database and moderate the forum on a voluntary basis and can contact some Airnav people on specifics

I do not belive the support personel have much in the way of technical knowledge especially in Linux

I note the feeder you refer to has other as his FW version and appears to located in the proximity of abcd1234 or at least is located in the same town.  abcd1234 has tried to assist and if anyone can help its him

I noticed that my MLAT is not working:

How can I fix this?

The mlat-client should NOT run on its own, and that is why it its systemd service is disabled. What you are seeing in your screenshot is normal. On all of my many RPis I see the same thing.

When the rbfeeder runs, it issues necessary command to run mlat-client directly, and not through systemd service.

If you check the status of rbfeeder by command "sudo systemctl status rbfeeder" you will see following three lines.  Below the line starting with "CGroup", you will find two more lines. The first one shows that rbfeeder is started successfully. The second one shows that mlat-client has been started successfully.

Seems existing mlat-client package is corrupted.
(1) Purge it
(2) Clean apt to remove saved corrupt package, else apt will again use it when you issue command to install mlat-client
(3) Update
(4) Install mlat-client
(5) Reboot (important step after installing mlat-client)
(6) Check status of rbfeeder.

Code: [Select]
sudo apt purge mlat-client

sudo apt clean

sudo apt update

sudo apt install mlat-client

sudo reboot

sudo systemctl status rbfeeder

Thank you for the detailed descriptions, but unfortunately nothing has changed.  MLAT still doesn't work for me.
I think there may be a problem with Python, because when I change the entries in etc/rbfeeder.ini, I get different logs.  As you can see at the top, it recently worked for me with the Python 3.7 entry.
 Maybe one of the Moderators should delete my entries and move them to a new thread so as not to clutter this topic?

Most likely yes, but no guaratees. Try and see. All my Pis with Bookworm have RB24 mlat working ok.

By the way, did you add your latitude, longitude and altitude above sea in your file /etc/rbfeeder.ini ? One reason of mlat not working is this information missing or wrong.

Two methods to set location.
Try both one by one, and see with each one if mlat starts working

(1) on your station page "www.radarbox.com/stations/EXTRPIxxxxxx", as described by Alan in his poat above. You must login to make "EDIT" option appear.

(2) in file /etc/rbfeeder.ini

Please see screenshots below

While entering the values of lat (latitude) and lon (longitude), be careful to use -ve sign depending on your location. For example at my location (Canada) the lon (longitude) is negetive, so I entered the value of lon with a minus sign , like below:

lat=43.5xxxx
lon=-79.6xxxx

Please see attached image.

I see that we did not understand each other.
I don't have to enter anything because I already have this data in the rbfeeder.ini file.
The file has not changed after reinstallation and looks identical to the one here: https://forum.radarbox24.com/index.php?topic=102661.msg581951#msg581951
Previously, as advised, I removed the # before mlat.
I suspect, however, that it should be empty after reinstallation.

During routine maintenance of my Raspberry Pi, I noticed that the rbfeeder package was recently updated.  Under rbfeeder version 1:1.0.11+bookworm, I am now seeing "43 Stations Synced".

Is there a changelog for rbfeeder anywhere that I could consult to understand what has changed?

Hello everyone. Hi @abcd567 and @Runway31.

I've had a station for a few years, but it never ran properly. Now I have redone everything in the last few days, replaced the hardware and apart from the MLAT service, I am very satisfied. Can you help me? MLAT active (No stations synced).

Result of (sudo systemctl status rbfeeder | sed ‘s/ / /’):
Code: [Select]
CGroup: /system.slice/rbfeeder.service
             ├─591 /usr/bin/rbfeeder
             └─603 /usr/bin/dump1090-rb --write-json /dev/shm/ --net --quiet --mlat --forward-mlat --net-bo-port 30105 --lat 52.XXXXX --lon 9.XXXXX --modeac --fix --adaptive-burst --adaptive-range -gnss

I made the settings for the position via the interface. Values anonymised:

Result of (sudo nano /etc/rbfeeder.ini):
Code: [Select]
[client]
network_mode=false
log_file=/var/log/rbfeeder.log

key=dxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
sn=EXTRPI027193
lat=52.XXXXX
lon=9.XXXXX
alt=69

[mlat]
autostart_mlat=true
#mlat_cmd=/usr/bin/python3.9 /usr/bin/mlat-client

[dump978]
#dump978_enabled=true

I have also reinstalled the MLAT service:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt purge mlat-client
sudo apt clean
sudo apt install mlat-client
sudo reboot

Of course, I also rebooted the Raspberry and gave it some time to boot up and start all services. If you still have questions about the current system:

Result of (cat /etc/os-release):
Code: [Select]
RETTY_NAME="Debian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm)’
NAME="Debian GNU/Linux’
VERSION_ID="12’
VERSION="12 (bookworm)’
VERSION_CODENAME=bookworm

If you want to know which station it's about, have a look here: https://www.airnavradar.com/stations/EXTRPI027193 (https://www.airnavradar.com/stations/EXTRPI027193)

I would be grateful if you could help. Now I would like to have all services running and not a ‘half-finished state’ like before.

Greetings
391P

Hi 391P

Would I be correct in thinking you are using an older version of the Pi OS??  Reason I was asking is that the MLAT client is now within the latest version of the RB software  see reply 9 of this thread https://forum.airnavradar.com/index.php?topic=107991.0

Only thing I can see so far is this from a previous post from abcd which will be helpful if using an older Pi os version

Python version entry in file /etc/rbfeeder.ini is by default commented out (see screenshot below which shows a # at start of mlat line). The rbfeeder  uses the version of python which is installed matching with OS version. Please do NOT remove # from start of mlat-line of file /etc/rbfeeder.ini...

Maybe worthwhile commenting it out

I have now installed all updates again and restarted. Let's see if the MLAT starts now. You can see the status on the website of the station. I won't be able to reply until tomorrow ;-)

sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade

Hi @Runway31

Thank you for the positive feedback. I noticed today that the first MLAT data packets were sent after updating the Raspberry yesterday. In the last few hours, however, the station has continued without successful synchronization.

That's why I sent an email to support a few hours ago. After I had no idea what could be wrong with the configuration - because MLAT data was also sent in the meantime.

Great! Now it works. I would still be interested to know what the missing piece of the puzzle was or it simply takes a while for Airnavradar to release the function...

In the same way, after restarting the Rapsberry several times, the error message appears that the sharing key is invalid. But after about 30 minutes everything is fine again.

I would be interested to find out myself, I have a suspicion there was something wrong at the server end
