Hi there!
I'm an air traffic controller from a regional airport in germany. As an ex-center controller I'm used to work with a radar, but we don't have one here at the airport. We got a CTR airspace D and Lufthansa and OLT here with Saab2000 and CRJ2. Still its not mandatory for smaller airports to have a radar and you are not allowed to do seperation with it. But still I'm looking for a good tool to have at least some information about my airspace. So what exactly would I be able to see with this airnav-radar? Especially the small VFR-planes, I don't care about the traffic in Frankfurt or Berlin (its also interesting of course). Would I get a good traffic picture of my CTR, how many percent of the VFR traffic would it cover? The landscape is quiet flat, so it should have a good coverage.

Hi there, welcome to the forum :-)
You might be able to get an answer here from a RadarBox user in your part of Europe, but if you were happy to let us know your airfield, I'll post some screenshots of Network data if I see anything in your area.
However, it's impossible to say exactly what you will see as it does depend on the Mode S fit in the aircraft using your field. Almost certainly you will not see light GA traffic, as there is no reason for these aircraft to be fitted with another expensive item of kit. Some light aircraft do show up in the list, but these are few and far between and they are very unlikely to show up on the map.
It sounds as though coverage would be good at your location though, although as you are already aware, you could only use the display as " personal information" rather than for any type of ATC information service - better than nothing though.

Well, the airport is "Heringsdorf" in the far north east Germany on the island "Usedom", 2 miles from the polish border. But I thougt that everyone has to be ModeS equipped by now and that the radarbox would pick up all their signals. Don't all the C172s and P28As use ModeS now? Those are the aircraft I'm concerned about, because you always have VFR pilots, which don't do what they are told and suddenly show up in the final close to the airliner... I'm curious about your pictures of the area here!

And thanks for the nice welcome and fast answer!!

Mode-S yes but it does not mean they be shown on the map in RadarBox. They need to have the Mode-S extended which is ADS-B details for aircraft to show there positions.
There are very few military or VFR aircraft which have this capability at the moment unfortunaly.

Oh, this is to bad. My boss probably wouldnt spend money on that then... Any idea what else I could use?
-
A radar or binoculars?
Unless the aircraft is transmitting some sort of information, then there is no way of picking it up with a passive system like an ADS-B receiver. The only way you are going to see them is by using an active system such as a primary radar, secondary radar (SSR Mode 3) or a combination of both.
I can see Heringsdorf on the RadarBox map, but there is only high level traffic showing at the moment (FL350 and above). I'll keep an eye on your airfiled and see if I can see any low level traffic, although this is only going to happen if there is a RadarBox user in your area.

Anakin,
Here are the Saab 2000 and CRJ2 aircraft I've picked up live, but I don't know if these plotted on the map, or just showing in the aircraft list. Are any of these aircraft that come into your airfield?
I'll do a bit of watching and see if theses aircraft are appearing on the map.

Yes, they are in it, its also a Saab 340 from OLT, but still its not worth it if you can only spot 8 ACF a week and maybe some businessjets. I get a handover from radar anyway, so I guess I have to stick to the binoculars...

I picked up 2 of the aircraft in the list, one Saab 2000 and one CRJ2. Neither of these was giving position information and they only appeared in the aircraft list. Also, neither was showing Flight ID, so I presume that they only have basic Mode S. I would guess that the rest of the feet has the same fit.
I'll look for the Saab 340, but it sounds like RadarBox isn't going to work at the airport, although it's still great fun to see all the other aircraft :-)
Maybe you need to speak to the aircraft operators and see if they have any plans to upgrade to Enhanced Mode S with position information?
