Title: Dublin \ Ireland RB Reception
Post by: Dub33 on January 25, 2008, 12:01:35 AM
Hi All,

I am a new user of the RB in Dublin, Ireland.

I live quite close to Dublin Airport and I am able to pick up all departures from RWY 10 at Dublin Airport, (as soon as they leave the ground), however, I have noted that the RB signal for arrivals over Howth Head at the Ameli point are being consistently lost at Ameli.

Do I have a filter switched on, which is casuing this loss of reception on these arrivals onto rwy 28 via Ameli \ Howth head, or is it more probable that someting is blocking my line of sight to the arriving aircraft over Ameli \ Howth Head. This quite problematic for me, as circa 85% of arrivals \ departures at Dublin, use runway 10/28.

I have included a screen shot with the Polar diagram switched on and without the Polar diagram switched on, if it helps

If it is  reception problem would a Jim M-75 Preamp solve the problem? Any help is welcome..

Sounds like a line of sight issue. Can you see the aircraft visually from your location when on approach?

A preamp will help but won't get round line of sight issues. A intresting calculator below which can work out the distance you can pick up aircraft depending on the height of your antenna and aircraft. (if there are no obstructions)

Hi,

Unfortunately no, i can't see the arrivals on approach from Ameli \ Howth head. I think they are down to circa 900ft - 1300ft at that stage, so "line of sight" prevents it.

Thanks for the assistance.

Hi,

Just an update,

Thanks a lot -- I adjusted the height & position of the antennae upwards by circa 7ft. it made a BIG difference.

Attached a polar diagram of the new reception and I can track the arrivals down to 2 miles out, at 600ft.

I suggest an outside antenna as hi as possible with a hi gain whip that will improve your close in performance as well as long range.

We will soon have on our main page a special antenna kit where users would be able to buy a all in one kit to improve their reception. Should be ready in 1 week. You may prefer to wait.
