Title: Oooh it's slow!
Post by: superspotter on October 14, 2011, 07:21:55 AM
I sure this will have been covered before and I apologise now in advance for not searching but...my airnav is taking forever to start up when starting my laptop. OK, around two minutes but that is an eternity for a programme surely? I think I remember reading that one way to speed up the start was to delete old data, I have done that but it has made no noticable difference. Anything else I should be doing?? kind regards clive.

Are you using the latest navdata database?  If so, then that has slowed down startup for me as well.

No, I am using an aftermarket one, DbPop.

No, I am using an aftermarket one, DbPop.

Maybe there's a problem with the database provided by DbPop?

How many entries does your database have?

During the load up, RadarBox does some validation checks on the database as well as loading some to memory. The larger the database the more work it needs to do on startup.

If Iam looking in the right place, 176691 entries. regards clive.

Hi,
Maybe this is what it causes, here it is
When the network is down and this happened 20 min ago
radarbox takes a log time time to start
When the network is oke and i start radarbox,no problem
Greetings

Thanks satbopper but Im afraid it happens every start-up. regards clive.

If that is 176,000+ aircraft, then that could cause slow startup.  Although I only startup my RB about once a week, and leave it running 24x7.  When I do startup, with 126,000+ aircraft, it is painfully slow - 75 seconds.

Thanks Tarbat, as always, for your insight. I guess I will just have to live with it!

I log in fresh every time I use it.  It can regularly take circa 6-8mins.  Sometimes it loads 3d on startup.  I prefer 2d view.  It will then usually 'not respond' for circa 5 mins whilst closing 3d map and opening 2d map interface.  Regularly it is 15-20 mins from hitting start before I have the 2d map I want on the screen.

I have latest 125K DB, around 17K of photo thumbnails (only since 1 Jan 11), every of Rod's and Bones Logos and outlines.

Tonight I know I hit the Airnav startup at 19:05 (as the end credits of a programme I was watching were rolling).  The first aircraft logged in mylog is 19:22

ACW367 - why do you just not start up in 2D?

ACW367 - why do you just not start up in 2D?

I try to set it up as such - but I never know if it will do it.  Sometimes it directly launches the 3D interface, sometimes it lauches direct to the 2D interface but never to the default.ml3 map or the one that was on there when I previously logged off.

Today I timed the start process
9:05 start button pressed, green tablet appears
9:09 green tablet disappears and interface opens (not responding)
9:10 2D map (not the defualt.ml3 or map I primarily use) and local flights appear
9:11 change of 2D map initiated, software not responding, no network flights
9:15 2D map changes local flights responding - no aircraft in mylog from 9:11-9:15
9:17 network flights come up - ready to go

Only 12 minutes today - better than the norm.

The one thing I hope the next version (after a bug fixing patch of course) is that they speed up the startup process and let users specifically set up all startup criteria in the preferences.

ACW367,

Probably 'teaching granny to suck eggs' but regarding the map on start up not being correct are you going into Window>Record Desktop before logging off ?

I start up fresh every day and only takes around 2 minutes to start and always in 2D as I want it to.

I start fresh each day, and this morning, with no other apps running, it took 4:17 minutes before the first aircraft appeared on the (2D) map.

I reckon the slowest factor is loading MyLog, which is now 275Mb - but then I'm using one that I haven't pruned since summer 2008 - I like to see the histories!

And I've got all the outlines including the high-res ones, logos, and silhouettes of course.

I do keep forgetting about that button.  But even getting to the first map is still usually over 10 mins and occasionally up to 20 mins.

You can speed up things in several different ways, open task manager and see how many processes you have running, about 35/40 is the target you should be looking for on a quad core desktop 35 or less on a reasonably fast laptop. If you run a programme called CC/cleaner, in the tools section the startup option gives you a list of all running progs and the option to disable startup on any you don`t need. While in T/M right click on the Airnav process select priority/high this can cause instability if you are short on memory or your temp folder is brim full, realtime is for fast computers but you can work through the options until you find a stable setting. Finally the thing that really cracked it for me (less than 40 seconds startup) I changed my HDD for an SSD expensive but so worth it. Regards Lou.

SSDs will help the running and startup of RadarBox.

A few customers mentioned why the RadarBox software causes a lot of hard drive activity, its due to the database saves that are required and other downloads such as network data, pictures. As machines head to SSDs this should not be so noticeable any more.

During the load up, RadarBox does some validation checks on the database as well as loading some to memory. The larger the database the more work it needs to do on startup.

This doesn't bode well for any significant increases in aircraft/routes added to the database does it?

Its worth it, is the easiest answer :)

Its best to load up the database to memory at the start to improve running speed when RadarBox has started. Regarding validation, again it has to be done to confirm the database is not corrupted.

There are items in the pipeline for the database such as new indexes on the tables which should improve the loading and searching however.
