hi i am new to this and want to know what type of external arial i would be best with for airnav i live about 20 mile from manchester airport egcc there are so many you all talk of i am lost.
-
It depends where the 20 miles takes you to i.e where are you? If that's in the middle of the Pennines then you won't get the same reception as you would say on the Cheshire flat lands. Likewise if you want to receive down to runway level at EGCC then unless you can have an effective line of sight then you'll likely lose planes as they descend.
A bit more detail and I am sure you'll get the advice you need.

Hi Mike,
I use an ADS-B (SBS / RadarBox) Vertical Outdoor Model Antenna from http://www.dpdproductions.com/page_vhf_air.html
It works great! Has extended my range from approx 60-80 miles out to 100-130 miles.

I use this

and have 150-225nm virtually round the compass.

A useful aid for working out what an aerial's view will be is here: http://www.airnavsystems.com/forum/index.php?topic=3335.msg31610#msg31610
and I did some instructions here: http://www.rbearden.toucansurf.com/HeyWhatsThat%20Panorama.doc
Just remember it only takes account of terrain and your aerial height, not surrounding trees or buildings.
