Apparently some Scottish airspace has been closed this evening and areas of Ireland face a threat of closure tomorrow.

Yes it looks like no live airnav for a while.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has said all Northern Ireland airspace will be closed from 0700 BST on Tuesday due to volcanic ash drifting from Iceland.
Belfast International, Belfast City and City of Derry airports will all be closed until further notice.

No doubt that the cloud is spreading south again. It spent a couple of weeks just over Iceland, now it is predicted to cover the West of Britain later today.

The ash is back again,
Airspace over Scotland and Northern Ireland will be closed from 0700 BST on Wednesday due to volcanic ash, the Civil Aviation Authority has said.

Have the CAA no consideration? :) Here am I trying to evaluate my Radar-Rama for a week before swapping it over with supplied antenna.

It's neither.
Only the government has the authority to close airspace. In fact technically airspace isn't closed, but the CAA (as the regulator) has told NATS (as the ANS provider) that it is not authorised to offer an ATS service in the affected areas, which effectively means no IFR traffic and therefore no airline operations.
GA aircraft are still free to fly, outside of controlled airspace, right through the ash cloud if they so desire ...

The CAA Safety Regulation Group (SRG) are basically acting as coordinators. http://www.caa.co.uk/default.aspx?catid=3 There is a committee formed under the auspices of the SRG that takes advice as required from Cabinet Office (COBR), Met Office, MOD DAATM, NATS, the engine manufacturers and the major airline customers.

The aircraft going over the Atlantic today have been taking a very strange routing heading in a very northerly routing over the UK today, heading up and over Iceland to avoid the ash. Must be costing a fortune with the extra mileage invloved. Still no doubt it will be proving very productive and busy for Orkney with lots of aircraft you dont usually get to see.

Yes it has been very busy indeed. We take notes in a notebook of any ads-b aircraft we see that fly within a 35nm radius of us. Normally we have an average of 2-3 aeroplanes a day but yesterday we had 51 and today we have had already over 30. My mother used to say she would have liked to be an air traffic controller but I think having this number going past has changed her mind.
Also I have seen and heard a few aircraft having to hold because they couldn't get oceanic clearance.

Let the ashes I'm like, here in Portugal has experienced many new aircraft that would otherwise not passed through here.

201 aircraft logged since midnight last night till 11.30 am this morning, yesterday was a total of 224 for the 24 hr period. I'm thinking christmas has come early. Shetland skies have never been so busy I think. My coverage area extends to north of Scotland in the south, will post a polar diagram.

The North Sea is very busy just now as well. Its amazing how far coverage is spread over the water.

The screen is an amazing sight just now with all the flights around the north of Scotland and over the north sea.

Similar down here in Orkney - 454 flights logged since just after 9am yesterday. Have never seen anything like this before. Very quiet locally - think Kirkwall is closed till about 1pm

Hi smcm, this is the best thing to come out of the volcanic eruption that I can think of, I think I must be around the same amount of flights as you. Is Kirkwall closed due to ash, Sumburgh is opened as far as I know. Wifes sister is flying to Aberdeen today and has just been offered an earlier flight.

Think Kirkwall is open now - the Glasgow Saab has just been given his clearance.
The Sumburgh S-92 Coastguard Rescue 102 has just landed at Kirkwall for a medivac to Aberdeen and was advised by atc when he passed North Ronaldsay that we were still affected by the ash

Same here on Tarbatness. 340 flights logged so far today - amazing. I've never seen so many aircraft going directly overhead of The Port.

Probably the most amazing traffic conditions I've seen since moving to Scotland five years ago. This was what it always used to be like back down south (Dorset), but today I've logged 480 aircraft so far, and 27 of those have passed within 2 miles of my home.
I don't often get the chance to see so many aircraft flying overhead in such lovely blue sky conditions.

Am fun tripping in Canada at present. Last night was chatting to a man in the bar at the Marriott Montreal and his EGLL-CYUL of yesterday was routed over Norway. Me in Quebec City now till end week. Hope all goes for my return trip on 16th.Regards

Just had TAP114 A332 CS-TOF on my box came down over Scotland now over north west England en-route Newark Porto. Thats a long diversion, but unfortunately to cloudy to see.

Better luck this time as I managed to see TAP103 A332 CS-TOE, Lisbon-Newark, as it flew nearly over the top of my house even although it wasnt trailing. Having Airnav let me know where to look for it and I got it as it came out of some cloud.

Morning all, things are defintiely on the up and up. Conditions on the ham band of 23 cems - 1296Mhz - remain steady but traffic on the box is increasing by about 5% a day on the average. Certainly more traffic showing up. Who`s complaining?!! Roger

There is a new pulse of ash heading for the UK. At this time it is looking like UK Airspace will be in the black No Fly Zone from Sunday night. The wind will change to blow it east from late monday to early wednesday.

Bad thing to say but hopefully if ash returns it will increase flights up my way again as I am back down to 70-80 flights again. This will hopefully increase when I get antenna outside as mentioned in other post.
