Title: AirNav radarbox freezing
Post by: MIKE.UTD on September 29, 2010, 04:04:09 PM
Hi,

Never had any problems with my AirNav. However last week I took advantage of the half price offer on the 5 min delay network.

Since then it keeps on freezing after a few minutes and does not restart also in my flights aircraft are shown twice and today a new record 4 times ?

Anyone any ideas ?

I am using XP , DELL Pentium 4, CPU 3.06 GHZ, 2.00 GB of RAM.

Mike.

Sounds like your machine is struggling to cope with the extra load from the network. Do you have anything else running? and how fast is your internet connection.

Hi,

Froze again today after just 10 minutes, however an alert pop up did work which I typed in as soon as switched on.

Internet speed as above all working okay and nothing else running.

PC is new DELL Studio XPS 8100, INTEL CORE i7 CPU 860 @280GHZ,8GB RAM,WIN7 64 BIT.

Never froze till network purchased which at this point is a waste of money if machine keeps freezing.

Can anyone help ??

Mike.

I think i have a similar problem.

My PC is also a new DELL Studio XPS 8100, Intel Core i7 CPU 860 @280GHZ, with 8GB RAM,WIN7 64 BIT.
The RadarBox application is working fine but freezes almost everytime during shutting down making me losing a lot of logs.

Anyone a solution for this problem?

Regards,

Dirk.

I must ask the standard questions ;)
Have you downloaded and installed the new 64bit drivers?
Did you do a standard install where the installation decides on the folder it goes into or did you choose your own folder?

No to either of these is a problem.

Dirk, do you use the red cross at the top left or use File-Exit.  Airnav doesnt like the red cross method.

Andrew

Indeed Andrew, my Dell PC is equipped with the McAfee Security Center.
The McAfee firewall has an exclusion for the RadarBox and is granting all traffic in/out.

But have you setup an exception to stop McAfee scanning the Radarbox folder for viruses?

With the latest version of McAfee, you will probably be getting locked databases.  See discussions (albeit with a different product) at
http://www.kinetic-avionics.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=13222&p=103154
http://www.kinetic-avionics.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=13144&p=102818

Secondly, where do you have ANRB installed?  If in the standard location (C:\Program Files), then you will need to understand the Virtual Folders, and setup virus scanning exceptions there as well.

Hi Tarbat,

The RadarBox application is installed on a seperate D-partition so no problems with the virtual folders.
My Dell PC is equipped with the latest version (2010) of McAfee SecurityCenter.
The only 3 options i have for realtime scanning are:
- turn off realtime scanning
- scan programs en documents
- scan all files
It's impossible to exclude one single folder i think...

Dirk.

You'll need to find someone familiar with McAfee.  I got rid of it about a year ago because there was NO WAY of excluding a folder.  See http://www.airnavsystems.com/forum/index.php?topic=3412.msg32774#msg32774

I don't know if McAfee have added that facility now.  I switched to MSE for antivirus instead.

EDIT: Sorry, link was to the beta forum.  What I posted back in September 2009:

McAfee won't help either.  There's no way to exclude the Radarbox folders in McAfee, so all file activity in RB will be virus-checked :(

When BT switched to McAfee (from Norton), I found Radarbox performance suffered.  So I switched to Microsoft Security Essentials instead, and excluded the Radarbox folder from virus checking.

For info, I run Vista Home Premium on a Dell Dimension Intel Dual Core 2.8ghz with 2gb RAM.  I install Radarbox on a separate drive, formatted as FAT32 to avoid Vista's terrible Transactional NTFS, which also hits I/O performance.

Dirk,

I also have McAfee, and AirNav was also excluded from the firewall, but AN continued to crash.

Try excluding the AirNav files from the McAfee scan.

It solved the problem for me.

Also, make sure that AirNav is installed in c:\AirNav and not the default folder.

Tarbat,

Thanks for the information about McAfee.
I'm going to try removing McAfee from my PC, hoping this will solve the problem... In the past i always used Avast antivirus (free version) without any problems similar as those mentioned.

Hi Andrew,

I suppose you use an older version of McAfee.
My version (McAfee Security Center 2010) looks different and the option to exclude folders as mentioned in your screenshot is not available...
In the past i used Avast antivirus on my former PC and this programme offered the possibility to exclude the airnav-folder just as in your screenshot.

Thanks for the feedback,

Dirk.

Hi Mike,

I think the problem is solved over here.

I removed McAfee completely from my PC and i also used an utility to remove every trace of the McAfee package, this utility is called 'MCPR.EXE' and can be found on the McAfee website.
Afterwards i installed Avast antivirus and excluded the RadarBox folder from any kind of scanning.

Until now everything is working smooth without freezing on shutting down.

Fingers crossed and of course i kindly want to thank everyone for the help and support.

Regards,

Dirk.

Hi Dirk,

Looks like it's McAfee then as I had no problems previously with Norton.

AirNav are trying to do something for me if not will go back to Norton.

Did you have the same problem as freezing or the program stop working with an error box coming up ?

Also in your AirNav folder and drivers what is shown there ?

Thanks again for your help.

Mike.

Hi Mike,

I my case the freezing occured mostly on quiting the program. I didn't get any error box.
Since i removed McAfee from my system yesterdag, everything is running very smoothly.
No crashes and freezing anymore.
I have more then 28000 contacts in the mylog.
At this moment i'm receiving 370 planes (102 with ADS-B).

Dirk.

Hi,

Today finally got round to getting rid of McAfee. Downloaded Norton which I have never had any problems with on this my desktop or Samsung Netbook.

Still getting the same freezing fault and ANRB.EXE has stopped working.

Can anyone please post on her a picture of what should be in the drivers and other settings.

Starting to do my head in !!

Mike,

Did you use the MCPR.EXE utility?
This utility can be found on the McAfee website and removes every remaining trace of the McAfee package from your PC.
At my site everything keeps working well since the removal of McAfee.

Dirk.

Hi Dirk,

No forgot will do that now.

Just for information just did the below :

Our new Microsoft Certified Driver package is now available from:
http://www.airnavsystems.com/download/ANRB/drivers/ANRB64bitDrivers.zip

Instructions:
1- Download the file above;
2- Unzip it to a folder on your computer;
3- Disconnect your RadarBox USB cable, wait a few seconds and connect it again;
4- When Windows prompts you to find the proper RadarBox driver browse the folder where you have extracted your drivers to;

If the above Windows prompt box does not appear:
1- Go to Windows Control Panel - Device Manager- USB Controllers - RadarBox - Driver -  Update Driver
2- Point at the relevant folder and install the drivers;

Says I have the latest drivers.

Just for info there is no AirNav driver folder in my C:Programme files and(X 64) version just in my C:Airnav radarbox/drivers.
Which has 2 folders :

ANRB64bitDrivers 15/10/10 File folder
ANRB64bitDrivers 08/11/09 Compressed zipp.

Is this the problem ?

Thanks again.

Mike.

Hi,
MCPR.exe just donloaded and cleaned up McAfee.
Less than a minute got message :

ANRB.exe

ANRB.exe has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
Close program.

Help !!
