Yassu Alan,
I am looking forward being a member of the global AirNav.Systems Team. My external antenna is not yet fixed optimal, as right now the view is blocked towards the South and South East. However I hope to sort this out in the next 2 weeks.
By the way can you tell me how much data the AirNav RadarBox ComStation is sending out via the internet connection approx. per day or per month? Why do I ask? If I move the antenna to the best possible position, I will need to hook up the box with an internet dongle and with the dongle I do not have unlimited internet / GB's. Well there is always room for improvement, especially towards the interesting South, South East area, haha.
Final question. I have also seen that some AirNav RadarBox ComStation's have "STATION RADIO" for their nearby airports (for example PGANRB300287). I am smack in the middle of Chania (LGSA / CHQ) airport AND Heraklion (LGIR / HER) airport. How do I get these station radios linked to "my" station? Or at least one of them?

Depending on range and number of received airframes you can expect something between a few 10MB and up to 100MB to 200MB.
On busy days I've about 100MB upstream traffic. Stations is PGANRB300066. You can compare my range and traffic with yours to get an idea where your upload traffic might be.

The ATC is set up by Airnav. No user input at this time but a firmware upgrade is being prepared to allow ATC to be set up by users.
As you state south/south east could be better.
All data is upload no download

Hi Alan and Ingo, included in the box of the AirNav RadarBox ComStation, were 4 metal rods, probably to be used as a radial on the antenna, 3 on the side and one right on the top. I do not use them at present. Question: Does AirNav wants me to stick all of them on the antenna anyway, or should one only use them in case of a bad reception?

Markos don't do it, it will kill your ADS-B/mode s reception if you apply them.
The three on the side will generate a virtual ground plane above the 1090MHz antenna part, which is used for ADS-B/mode s reception.
I haven't connected these parts too. They are only neccessary for improved VHF Radio reception.

Ausnahmsweise mal auf deutsch sonst sollten wir aber der Höflichkeit halber beim Forum üblichen englisch bleiben.
Airnav arbeitet hier leider voll nach dem Leitfaden das Anleitungen vollkommen überbewertet sind.
Einige nutzer der ersten Comstations hatten massive Probleme mit dem ADS-B Empfang nachdem sie die "Stäbe" montiert hatten.
Od das Problem bei Deiner Antenne nicht mehr auftritt ist mir nicht bekannt.
Da sie aber für den ADS-B Empfang nicht benötigt werden kann man sie auch weglassen.

Hi Ingo, as I speak several languages I thought it might be easier, haha. English it is, tally-ho! Anyway I got rid of the rods, as a decrease in reception is definitively not what I am looking for. I was just annoyed that I could not yet get my reception in the direction south-south east up, grgrgr. I guess I will need to find a more optimal location for the antenna.

Ingo, after tweaking my aerial I have improved my reach overall and am now even biting out a big chunk of western Turkey ;-) Some gains towards the East, but unfortunately besides a spike going South no noteworthy gains in that area. As my station is located on the North Coast of Crete, I come to the conclusion that the 3 big mountain ranges on Crete, the Lefka Ori in the West, the Ida in the middle and the Dikti in the East, are seriously hampering my reception. As I am not able to move any mountains, I guess I must be happy with the 98% coverage of the whole of Greece :-)

Looking great Markos. Yes the southern coverage will be being cut off by the mountains. I was just looking at your feed and noted an unknown and found it to be AT43 SX-NIK so now added into d/b.

Hi Alan, be prepared for many new unknown flying objects, as I come across them quite frequently, after I had adjusted the aerial, haha. Although I am not looking 24/7 at my screen as I need to work too, what do you want me to do when I see these unknown planes? Where do I need to report them?
By the way I also see quite a lot of Italian and French military planes coming by. Where are the Yanks, Brits and Greeks, who are always buzzing above my head, as here at LGSA / CHQ we have the largest NATO military base in the whole Mediterranean? Or do they have their transponders switched off, do not have one or are they concealed?

If you want to report unknowns please feel free to do so on the Database updates thread http://www.airnavsystems.com/forum/index.php?topic=8314.10395. Hex code will do but if its available its callsign/flight ID will help. Most military aircraft are not ADS-B equipped so will not show on the map. They should however show on the Flight List unless they have their transponder switched off.

Alan, a thought from my side. You agree with me that the mountain ranges to my South are blocking my reception in that specific direction. How about my super reception towards the North? I am breaching my 5 ring radius easily. Are the mountains now working in my favour and giving me a turbo boost in that direction? Or is it the large body of water directly in front of me, that is helping the signal along? Or is it perhaps a combination of both?

Alan, the "crazy" foot print that I have presently got, drives me nuts, as mine just looks weird, especially with the spike going south! Some stations have an almost perfect reception inside their 250 NM radius. I am nowhere near to that perfect circle. I already mentioned the mountain ranges over here earlier, but actually I am in a gap between 2 ranges, thus I reckon I should have at least a better coverage, compared to the one I am getting now. Who or what determines how the foot print looks like? Is it just AirNav or is it based on an average of the contacts which I am able to establish? This brings up another point. How comes that the foot print does not vary on a daily basis, as planes are never in the same spot? Or is the whole foot print thingy just cosmetic?

It is determined by the aircraft you pick up and it does not vary as it is built up over time, 7 days I believe from looking at the range grid. When you got your unit initially your coverage pattern was small but it is filled in as each hours/day passes and aircraft are picked up.
ADS-B coverage works by line of site from your antenna and there are lots of factors such as the topography of your area, the height of the traffic being picked up, surrounding high buildings, nearby trees etc which can alter the coverage pattern
You will notice RESET beside your max range and I believe pressing it will remove your coverage footprint and allow it to build up again.

Alan, thank you for your extensive explanation. Next to: "Max Range: 409.21 NM (last 7 days)" I did not find a reset function. If I click on (last 7 days) just a pop up window opens up, where one can see when I was online and was uploading data. If I click on the window it just disappears, nothing else. Anyway, I will keep an eye out how the foot print develops.
Something what comes into my mind now is the fact that I have a quite large satellite dish "behind" my external dedicated 1090 MHz antenna. This might influence (block?) my reception towards the south and south east. Maybe the dish is even working as some kind of deflector shield, hence the extremely good reception towards the north. I will have a 2m antenna fitted to my house shortly for my business communications, thus I might want to stick the new antenna on the "old" 1090 Mhz pole and will look for a better location (away from the sat dish) for optimal 360 degrees reception. Perhaps my present disappointing reception towards the south, will show me exactly where my more important 2m antenna should be placed, haha

If you go into File>Preferences>Legends and Labels at the top of the page you will see a box stating 'Clear/Reset Polar Diagram'. If you click on that it will clear the polar diagram and start to reform over again but give it some time to fully reform.

Hello Ian, my best guess is that you are talking about a specific software program. I do not have one. I am just looking through my web browser on https://www.radarbox24.com/stations/PGANRB300799 . In the top right hand corner I only have "my account", where I can log in or out and edit some personal details. Furthermore on the top I only have pull down menu's with: store - coverage - history - data feeds - about. In the personal settings I have got: profile - your stations - account settings. So no box stating 'Clear/Reset Polar Diagram'.

You are quite correct. I merely use the standard AN radar box. I too cannot find anything stating reset for your polar diagram. I can only suggest that as Alan states you wait a few days to see how your polar diagram builds up or perhaps someone who is a bit more savvy in radarbox24 can be of help.

Ian, don't mention it mate. I am just new at this and am trying to find out the ropes by implementing as much tips I can get from "senior" members. I am only very surprised about the coverage at my location. I already climbed up in a relatively short time to global ranking nr. 23, for whatever it is worth. However I have no clue how I should interpret this, nor how the calculation is done. Maybe they give incentives to newbies, haha

Just had a look at your screen shot and note that I just mentions last 7 days without reset. I can reset from my end and have just done so but as you have so many aircraft the polar diagram fill very quickly.
Regarding the satellite dish it may very well be operating as a screen if it is preventing the antenna seeing part of the sky and preventing any aircraft it is casting a shows over from being seen

wow resetting from a remote location, you must have special powers!. Yes, I've seen that you did something. I have also seen a drop from rank 23 to 145 after your resetting. Will be interesting to see how the foot print develops this time. I love this stuff!
The AirNav antenna is a meagre 15 cm above the sat dish, if you look at the set up from the south-side. Isn't that enough clearance? Do the planes need to see more of the antenna? Otherwise the only solution is to get a longer pole and more cable, hehe

I am no engineer Markos, but I don't think that 15cm of the antenna showing would be enough or do you mean the whole antenna is 15cm above the sat dish.

Alan, you understood correct. Viewing south my antenna is just peeping 15 cm above the sat dish, which is located 1 m further back. But I can still get a +/- 75 NM reception, hehe. I already figured out that a higher pole and more cable is the way to go, but I can not find the supplied cable pro-200 low loss 50 ohm coaxial cable 3dr-3 in Greece. Or could someone recommend another cable, which I then might find in Greece? Any feed back from anyone is highly appreciated!

CO-22, LMR400 or AIRCOM PLUS are suitable cables.
Also ask support if they could send you a 12.5m antenna cable as one may be available

Kalimera Alan, Please remotely reset my stats again. I have put the 3 m pole up and the AirNav antenna has totally cleared the SAT dish by 1 m. Why do I want a reset? Instead of getting better coverage to the south or in general, my reception totally went to the dogs max range wise and I need the reset to confirm it. I am also getting a lot less contacts to the north-east. Perhaps it is a cable issue, but I doubt is as I used the supplied one. Thank you in advance!

Hello Alan, I have seen the reset, thank you. Why did I mention something is not correct? Since I heightened the antenna, I have been getting irrational flying patterns of several air planes, criss crossing all over the place. Furthermore I had excellent coverage of LGSA / CHQ, where I could see the planes taxing to their final stop, every turn on the ground etc. Now I can not and planes even"overshoot" the runway and it takes several seconds longer before I get the correct height and speed. This did not show with the "blocked", low antenna. It is easy for me to write this stuff, as after a couple of weeks looking at AirNav I know exactly what to expect and look for. Anyways, it's Saturday, so I can monitor the progress closely. It will be an interesting day. Kind regards,

Alan, I hear you. I just tweaked the antenna again and changed the cable routing (I wished I had a longer cable wink, wink). Perhaps things will be back to normal again. One last question about the signal. Is it possible for a station to "hijack" a contact, or does a plane connect to any station it can reach? I mean does a plane connect to multiple stations or does it ONLY connect to the best station around? Is there a maximum of stations to which a plane can connect?

Alan, thanks for the feed back again. The AirNAv antenna is sitting now for the 3rd day on the 3 m pole. How are the results? Honestly disappointing. Although I am way above the sat dish, my max range has decreased by approx 70 NM and my average range by approx 40 NM. Also I already mentioned the irrational flying patterns and loss of detail on the LGSA / CHQ airport. This is not what I expected. Perhaps the sat dish is interfering from below. I will re-attach the antenna again on my 1,4 m pole and nestle it just above the sat dish, just as it was originally placed. It would be great if my reach and detail goes up again.
Please be so kind and reset my data, as I will be putting up the smaller pole within the next two hours. Thank you in advance.

Its reset Markos. The sat dish may be causing corruptions as you state buy you are still getting decent range although your southern coverage didn't expand as expected

Hi all,
just last week i did put my antennas 2 meters higher on a new pole. One goal was to come above a sat dish of a neighbours roof. The other goal was to get a better range. Now, with the new pole, the range went about 25 km biger but the range of the directional antenna that was pointing to the sat dish went also about 25 km biger and lost range in the opposite dircetion. Interfering objects can increase the range to one direction. That was my experiance.

Hi Rolf, that is what I am seeing. Now that I am back to my "old" setup, my sat dish, which is located behind the antenna, seems to propel the reach in a V shape towards the north. I have a feeling that I did not yet have found my sweet spot, as at present the pattern does not reach as far, compared to it's best. I will be working on it, haha

Those are absolutely necessary, part of the antenna's ground plane.

the ground plane shall be at the bottom end of the antenna. The rods at the antenna discussed here were placed at the top end of the ADS-B antenna part. Therefore the 1090MHz reception was a catastrophe if the rods were mounted.
Sometimes it might be better to carefully read the whole plot before posting a comment that doesn't fit to the particular topic.
Further the antenna has an additional problem: the point were the roads should be mounted weren't water tight --> Antenna drowns if there is strong wind paired with rain which was resulting in a massive reception reduction for about 7-10days. After demounting the antenna at the end of the last year, after 1 year on the roof, I found traces of water entry at the rods mounting threads and inside the antenna. Therefore it is very good that airnav has had withdrawn from that specific antenna very quickly.

The concept is very interesting. Some silicon caulking can prevent the water ingress, but indeed mechanical resistance can be an issue.

Man, you may live in the deepest of the deep countryside (don't worry, I spent all of my youth in a similar place, I know how that is... and kinda miss it sometimes) but you're really on the path of several major air travel routes.

Hi,
New monitoring station in the center of México of a total of 90 stations and at the moment 35 active ones. I got the USB Flightstick on Saturday 2nd and from today on it is more or less running stable thanks to the help and huge patience of member Runway 31 here in the forum.
That huge Spike to the right was a failure as the plane was not really there. After restarting it normalized. Normally that plane was to the west of my station not more then 60 nm away.

The spike will go away as the coverage area normally shows over a weeks in time
