Happy New Year all.
There seems to be a wealth of knowledge amongst the AirNav Forum community of some of the most interesting/useful aviation websites.
Is there merit in having a thread on our forum for great aviation websites (just like there is for interesting aircraft, call signs etc). Whilst most of us know most websites, there are always a few we don't know. Therefore, I have a few suggestions for some threads:
Thread 1: “Websites – ADS-B logs” - Forum members post web addresses for sites with regularly updated ADS-B logs with a short description of the geographic areas they cover. Whilst Libhomeradar does a good job, it no longer covers non airline aircraft.
Thread 2: “Websites – live positional data” - sites which display live aircraft positional data from ADS-B receivers. E.g. Casper.frontier.nl, Radar Virtuel
Thread 3: “Websites – air traffic control” – sites which provide good information on charts, frequencies, live feeds.
Thread 4: “Great websites – General interest”
All other suggestions welcome. Perhaps these are all covered under one thread e.g. “Great aviation websites”?
Other blogs such as Radar Spotters have in the past attempted this and it would be a shame if our own beloved messageboard lags behind. I am happy to start the ball rolling if there is enough willingness to contribute. Please share your thoughts.

Let's go ahead with it! We have sent some interesting sites to the Aviation board lately.
Here they go (feel free to organize them later on - most of them airline pilot related as some of AirNav team members are airline pilots):
- Interesting Airline Pilot charts site: http://www.aircharts.ch
- Flight Procedures: http://www.smartcockpit.com/
- Live Audio from Amateur Radio Receivers: http://www.globaltuners.com/
- Live ATC: http://www.liveatc.net
-
Thanks AirNav Development for your kind support.
For the first installment, please find below a list of dedicated airport Plane Spotter websites which provide movement logs and photos of interesting aircraft.
Leeds Bradford - http://www.lbaviation.co.uk/
Manchester – http://www.tasmanchester.com/Home.html
Glasgow - http://www.egpf.info/
Liverpool - http://www.nwan.co.uk/review.html
London City - http://www.lcacc.org/operations/operations.html
LHR/LGW - http://www.lhr-lgw.co.uk/
Those of us who are aware of other similar sites across Europe (or other great aviation sites), can you please add to this thread with the web addresses so all users can benefit from them.
Cheers.

Have you tried www.aviation-links.co.uk ? That has over 25,000 links to aviation-related sites, hard to beat !
-
Thanks Dave. This is an excellent site and should be in everyone's bookmarks.
Look forward to hearing about more great sites from some of the others in the forum.
Again, the purpose of this thread is not to create an extensive list of websites but making the forum members aware of the select "must have" sites which are best-in-class and are worth sharing.
Here's one more, a central repository of all European ATC charts provided by Eurocontrol. Sign up for EAD “Basic access”. Go to “Enter Applications” and select “PAMS”. http://www.ead.eurocontrol.int/eadcms/eadsite/index.php%3Foption=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=25&Itemid=3.html

I often use http://flightaware.com/live/ to see what filed flight plan is for any particular flight. The flight plan is shown in the “Route” box. One can see 5 days flight plan history for a particular flight number. Works for flights to the UK or US.
Then I use the following website to plot the route on google maps in detail. It even allows you to choose the SID/STAR for the airports.

http://www.airlineroute.net
Provides daily updates of changes to and newly introduced scheduled airline routes. Includes a search facility to view all messages relating to your airport/airline/country of interest.

This thread is getting more interesting each day.

Another new website it maps the great circle route and distance between airports. There are also pages giving DAFIF details for the selected airport. Highly addictive

I've just discovered an FAA list of the actual operators of bizjets (rather than the finance companies) - It's their list of RVSM approvals and covers the US, Canada and Mexico, and you can doenload the data as PDF's or Excel spreadsheets.

For the sake of completeness of this “Great aviation websites” thread, I have added good sites posted on other threads recently:
* Pilot’s view of live aircraft over Portugal using Google Earth - www.navpt.com
* UK Aviation Frequency Database - http://www.airscene.co.uk/tinc?key=lcQ5Iywa&formname=uk_avi_db
Secondly, I was hoping forum members could contribute websites where daily ADS-B logs are posted (along with the region). Whilst libhomeradar does this to some extent, it no longer shows general aviation.
Here’s a few examples.
Europe wide - http://www.libhomeradar.org/databasequery/index.php
South Wales - http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/OTTSouthWalesandWest/
Glasgow - http://www.egpf.info/ (go to SBS-logs)
UK (midlands) http://www.virtual-radar.co.uk/Radarbox-Live.php
Can others think of anymore?

Here are the other regions of the RVSM approvals

All very well, but they don't seem to want to accept any new members at the moment. 2 days trying to register, filling out questionnaires, etc. They seem totally paranoid.
If you want military logs, the best I've found are on http://www.fightercontrol.co.uk/forum/ in the ModeS Logs section.
-

That seems very strange, looking at their stats they've had 15 new members in the last week alone, although none approved so far today so maybe their admin is having a day off ?

Well, they were around to send me a long questionnaire, which I sent back yesterday. I've never know a forum that needs to know so much before they'll let you register!!
As part of our continuing development we selectively approach new members to understand more about their interests. If you could answer the following questions it would be much appreciated:
1. Where are you located; Nearest town, which country?
2. Do you use a ModeS Receiver Yes/No
3. If Yes, which make and model?
4. How long have you had it?
5. If you don't have a ModeS Receiver, which one might you get?
6. Do you think the Kinetic SBS-1 is better than the AirNav RadarBox or vice versa? What about the new Aurora Eurotech receiver and software?
7. Which is the best product? Please explain why one may be better than the other.
8. What do you think about the two suppliers? Do they offer good or bad support? Do they over promote their products?
9. What about the supplier forums? Which is best and why?
10. Do you share data? Yes/No
11. If Yes, how? AirNav, PlanePlotter or a Basestation private network?
12. Where did you hear about Radarspotters?
13. What do you think is the best feature on Radarspotters? What can be improved?
14. Do you know anyone who is already a Radarspotters member and if so, what is the UserName?
15. Finally, what other hobbies do you have?
-

OK, I take your point.
They certainly weren't asking all those questions when I joined last year, otherwise they would have MYOB as my answer to most of them ...

It’s clear that website has an agenda.
- The spamming of our members by Moderators (something they totally ignored even though being caught doing it)
- Moderators who post instantly on there forum to highlight any issue mentioned on this forum but not competitors (this occurred yesterday and they deleted the post as soon as they realised they were totally wrong)
- Questionnaire which is more of a marketing survey for a specific company.
- Admission of the Admins/ Moderators not being neutral
The above is just the a scratch of the surface, we are all intelligent enough to work out all is not as seems.
Please do not give any further promotion to that website they are no help to the ADS-B Hobby community.
-
I agree. I feel just a bit conned by the radarspotters site. I simply wanted to register to ask some questions about buying my partner one of these radar systems, looking for impartial advise. Instead, I can't get registered, and get asked loads of probing questions.
Maybe it's just a site for getting people to answer their survey - definately a con. Steer clear. I did read through some of the posts, and it seemed a very bitter and twisted group of people - very strange. I guess there's some history behind their bad attitudes.

Maybe you can answer a lot of questions with: private
Second part of your reply: you can call it free speech, you can send in your own opinion on a lot of qestions, being pro or contra.
You can't do this in all matters on this forum, some posts are deleted.
I'm still member here because i do have a RadarBox and want to be up to date with the information of it.
-

I answered most questions "Don't know", since I don't know which system is better, or the suppliers, etc. It seems crazy that if you want to join a forum, you've got the know all the answers before they'll let you join!! I guess the forum is run by "know-it-alls", and you can't join their little club unless you also know it all.
Anyway, still trying to decide between buying my hubbie a Radabox, a sbs-1, or an Aurorora.
-
jannuh,
There propaganda of we delete posts etc.. are totally untrue. In the rare cases we have done that we have given reasons (usually due to libellous posts with no proof) They would have you believe we delete any bad comments, that is totally incorrect.
We actually had a member of our team posting on there forum to try and answer questions they felt had not been answered. His posts were eventually edited and he wasn't allowed to give AirNavs view, ask yourself why? In result we banned there moderators on our forum.
Furthermore posts on there forum (which as supposed to be free from any bias) have been deleted and members branded as not following there thinking and banned/gagged.
We have a hard job here of replying to customers in a public domain and keeping up to customer demand. We are doing our upmost to do this and we have gained the majority of the new market. This has made us enemies and is unfortunately part and parcel of the business world.
-
Just got this terse email from the radarspotter administrators. I guess I must have given the wrong answers on their questionnaire. I've read a few posts over their now, and looks like you need to hate Airnav with a passion before they'll let you in their little club. I'm rather glad they did reject me in the end.
Hi JoJo
We have noted your comments on the AirNav forum and it would appear that Radarspotters cannot meet your expectations. Thank you for your interest and maybe either the Kinetic or AirNav Forum will be able to answer your questions.

hi.jojo
I went one better and got barred for telling the truth, they must have deleted about 30 of my posts before they gag me.

But it now looks like they've gone one step further. If they think their forum can't meet your expectations, they ban you before you've even joined!!
Welcome JoJo. Get your partner a Rardarbox, it's the best.
-
had a account on that forum but after seeing how and why some of there members post topics i came to the conclussion that its some kind of vendetta.
i removed my account just after a few days.
the only expectations people have from a forum is that the can discuss there hobby and not joining a meaningless battle
-
It is well known in this area amongst distributors, dealers and everyone in this area that the radarspotters is a forum/site created by our competitors to try to pass the idea that AirNav is unreliable - something that was previously done by our competitors directly.
Radarspotters moderators are know to be ex-top posters and very old users of our competitors product and with very closed connections with ML&S (the distributors of SBS).
This is of course an illegal activity and we are taking the proper measures to deal with it. Our users will soon be informed about it.

The best repositry for Mode S logs that I have come across is the yahoo group below. Firstly, you will need a yahoo email account (or sign up to one) and will then have to request to join the group. Well worth doing.

Logs are mostly from the UK but non UK ones are also there.

At the beginning of this year I started this thread to liven up the forum and share our collective knowledge of the best the web has to offer enthusiasts such as ourselves.
I’ve noticed a lack of posts in the last few months and was hoping we could make a concerted effort to regain the momentum.
If you have discovered any websites worth sharing in the last few months please can you add these to this thread.
Here’s one from me: Wikepedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Aviation_terminology

WAD is a great site, although bear in mind that the airport data is based on the US Government's DAFIF database, which was withdrawn from the public domain in October 2006.
Fortunately, airports don't often tend to move, so most of the data is still valid !

These are all computer generated. Try the "show reel 2010" and dreamliner videos.

Now has Playback function going back 14 days and commencing at a selected time.
Just hit the live button to expose the calendar and start playback.

Very interesting. Even that site tells me that EZY4GL is from Gatwick to Alicante not Gatwick to Madrid as AN tells me every night in spite of me constantly changing it.

I've only just noticed that IATA have now got an online search page for airline/airport codes. Until now, I've been relying on "second-hand" websites.

Rod,
Unfortunately, it only gives the 3 letter codes used for airlines and airports. For the 4 letter codes used by AN for routes ,etc I use this site:

Just got this terse email from the radarspotter administrators. I guess I must have given the wrong answers on their questionnaire. I've read a few posts over their now, and looks like you need to hate Airnav with a passion before they'll let you in their little club. I'm rather glad they did reject me in the end.
Hi JoJo
We have noted your comments on the AirNav forum and it would appear that Radarspotters cannot meet your expectations. Thank you for your interest and maybe either the Kinetic or AirNav Forum will be able to answer your questions.
Just a short point to let you know that Radarspotters is under new management. Freedom of speech is back again. Everyone is welcome.

Thanks for turning the site round, your doing a great job Dan.
