Just got a call from Terry...40109F otherwise known as G-VLCN is up!
According to MyLog between 13:36-15-15:28 today.
Should be at Cosford for this weekend?

However, the Cosford airshow isn't until tomorrow, so this could be duff information.

The Tweet says that it is on its way back to Brize.

Well I finally took the plunge and purchased a scanner at long last - took my friend Terry out with me on Thursday as he knows about these things and ended up with the WinRadio G305e - what a superb piece of kit...very pleased.
All I need to do now is learn how to drive it ;^)
It also comes with a superb ACARS decoder but in addition it also feeds AirNav ACARS decoder without using the cable-into-the-soundcard method...
Just been listening to the Vulcan on 127.250 talking to Brize Norton....the WR even allows you to record just the actual voice traffic - intelligently filtering the silence and pausing recording by using the squelch setting. Saves browsing through hours of silence just to hear the conversations...
You mentioned yesterday that the Vulcan was in your aircraft list? Do you mean MyLog as I never see it in MyFlights here...
Can I ask how you knew it was squawking 3470?

I'm glad that you got yourself a scanner - sounds good, I'll take a look at the specifications.
Yes, the Vulcan was in MyFights, hence the squawk being known. Maybe you don't have the details in the database and therefor you are not realising that you are seeing it in MyFlights:

It can't appear in MyLog unless in appears in MyFlights first. It will not appear on the map as it's nor giving position info, but it will be in the MyFlights aircraft list.
The Tweet says that the Vulcan is diverting to Lyneham - can't see it on my box here in London.

You are probably right as I never actually looked for it in MyFlights <blush>
The database details are all there - well apart from the Vulcan to the Sky text but that is there now!
I am ashamed to say I have setup SmartView for the first time ever and populated it with the registration numbers of all aircraft in my Alerts list which include the Vulcan so when I get alerts in the future I can switch to SmartView and see exactly what is being displayed.
I wonder why the Vulcan doesn't show positional information - I mean it is hardly a top secret classified military aircraft any more is it - it more or less belongs to the people now doesn't it?

I purchased it with both the Wide FM & Professional Demodulator and have since downloaded the Advanced Trunking & DRM options along with the Virtual Sound Card/Digital Bridge plug-ins.
I know I'm drifting off-topic but can you tell I'm impressed? ;^)
Managed to record many exchanges between the Vulcan and Brize (including one where the Vulcan asked if he could be cheeky) but for some reason the Vulcan audio was distorted - didn't affect the other aircraft exchanges - only the important one that I was interested in :-(
The audio waveform from the Vulcan looked over-modulated in the 'scope so I am guessing no amount of processing would recover it...

The position info - or not as in the case of the Vulcan - is purely down to the equipment fitted in the aircraft. I'm sure somebody here will be able to give the technical details, but I'm guessing that a full ADS-B box costs more than a standard Mode S box (or is it just a case of hooking a GPS up to the Mode S box?). There is no requirement to transmit position information as the ADS-B position isn't used to monitor or control the aircraft, so there is no benefit to the aircraft operator.
It would be very nice for us though :-)
Maybe we should start a collection!

You know I did suggest some sort of collection/donation for this very reason some time last year ISTR.
That would be a great idea - think if every purchaser of the RB/SBS1 donated just one pound - what an asset it would be for us being able to track the Vulcan instead of just knowing it is up there - somewhere.
Well here's two quid for starters! ;^)

Have you seen a Vulcan in the air before bailey_uk?
A sight not to be missed...apart from when I was a kid the only other time I have seen the Vulcan was her last appearance at Sywell last year when she was late due to a leaking brake cylinder and then when she landed she had signs of metal in one of her engines.
After that TVOC ran out of money and it was touch & go whether she would ever fly again.
Great to know she is up & about again this year...

Hey Glyn, no I have not seen one yet! Im only 23, so possibly a bit too young to off seen them active?
PS, got your PM on here earlier no problems, all sorted now. Thanks for ya offer - was the connector at the end of the supplied coax. Its on its last legs but with a bit of a push the inner core portudes just enough to make a decent connection. It just cant afford to be nocked or pulled. Hopefully purchasing an external antenna soon anyway.

Yes, I saw the Leuchars date. Just a bit too far to go. You'd think with Lossie and its squadron history, they'd get the Vulcan up for a visit, do a practice bombing run on Tain Range. I can but dream!

well worth it ...it really was touch and go both going and returning !
I saw maybe one of the last display runs by the vulcan at Hucknall air show circa 68 or 69 never seen anything that big doing aerobatic type maneuvers.....the image of has remained with me since ............
was at wadddy last year ....on the sunday the nearest it got to fly was a nose wheel off the ground !
also tried to catch in the air at bruntingthorpe and cottesmore ...for its test evaluations ...but every time I try and see it it's developed faults !!
I'm expecting better things this year !

If you remember the operational displays of the Vulcan then you will be disappointed with what it is allowed to do in civil hands today but at least it is still flying.

Rather than the image, it's the sound of those engines howling gets my blood pumping, as for the prototype and pre-production Concorde Olympus 593s, quite something else again! Where I live, it used to be fantastic hearing the Concordes coming home (UK and French) every evening - now sadly missed by thousands.

Not necessarily - GAS has the Vulcan in its database as G-VLCN (which is correct as this is it's current registration), so if your database is autopopulated by GAS rather than manually edited to have XH558 as the registration, then looking for XH558 in the list or by setting an Alert isn't going to work.
If you use the Hex code 40109F then you can't go wrong, as this will show even if you don't have the Vulcan's data in your NavData.db3 database.
It's worth looking in MyLog to see if you already have 40109F as you might have picked up the Vulcan without realising it :-)
And of course, the Vulcan will only show up in MyFlights, not via the Network, as it doesn't transmit position information :-(

Just got back from Fairford,GlynH and i enjoyed a superb view from the roadside of the XH-558 start up,taxi,take off then return after Cosford,display land,taxi in and park up,brilliant,thanks for taking me Glyn, really enjoyed it immensely buddy.(we`ll be inside tomorrow,so better views all round buddy).We both had goose bumps and a lump in our throats when she gracefully took to the air where she and other iconic a/c should be?

No worries...I thought we'd better go and take a look Saturday while we had a chance just in case she went Tech or the cloudbase was too low on Sunday.
As it happened I needn't have worried - although there were many showers on Sunday, some heavy, she still managed to get airborne and strut her stuff.
I have to say that Martins display Saturday was fluid & smooth and you could sense and almost feel the respect with which he flew her.
On Sunday Kev seemed to be more agressive...sorry...bad choice of word...I meant dynamic and he appeared to 'put his foot down a bit' and push her harder that day which seemed to come through when watching his display.
Sort of a double edged-sword really...caught between trying to extend what years of flying she has left vs. showing her true potential and what she is really capable of?
Peronal opinion only you understand...:-)
Whichever way you look at it she was the only aircraft that day that received a standing ovation following her display and many of the visitors decided to leave after she had landed despite some great displays still scheduled like the Brietling Display Team, the extraordinary Red Arrows and an amazing Kiwi A757 being thrown around like a fighter!
It was this very 757 that I thought was an Airbus in trouble when it flew low over Banbury last Friday on its way to RIAT...:-/
The Vulcan Village was packed and she certainly draws the crowds in wherever she goes.
Such a pity no big-name sponsor has come forward what with the economic downturn etc.
Something special attached for those that might not have seen her live yet.
For those who have seen her you won't need any reminding but it gives me a chance to post one of my pictures anyway!

Glyn, thanks for sharing a superb shot - not quite the conventional, but all the more enjoyable for it, I can feel the ground trembling! 9/10, I'm only jealous, cos I couldn't get there. I saw the 4x RN Merlins arrive back at RNAS Culdrose (HMS Seahawk) yesterday afternoon.

I can only agree with you regarding the flight on Saturday. I was also at the show.
When the Vulcan started up and taxied to the runway every one at the show got to their feet! The whole crowd stood up, that in itself was an amazing sight.
I felt that the flight on Saturday was a gentle affair, the last time I saw the Vulcan fly I was using film in the camera, up at Barton nr Manchester.
I managed a few shots of her, but light was low I need a faster zoom lense. (May be next year)

You done well to get them both in the viewfinder at the same time - did you crop the picture?

She is always awesome to watch but Sundays display with THAT take off in particular...so exciting to watch and I saw tears rolling down the cheeks of some people watching.
I even got emotional...they are not wrong when they talk of the 'Vulcan effect'

Yes it was impossible to catch the pair just crossing and in sharp focus.
It was just down to luck that I got them in the viewfinder at the same time. When zoomed in they are moving a lot faster!
I did crop the picture using Adobe photoelements.
From what you have said I think Sundays show was better than Saturday. Any way I will no doubt be sticking my hand in my pocket for more donations this year and hope to cath her again.
I will have a shuffty at you flickr page later when I have finished the daughters taxi runs.

Hope she makes it James...she went 'Tech' yesterday with a gear door bracket which I believe has been sourced from XM655 at Wellesbourne and is good to go apart from the paperwork side of things which should be taken care of by this morning.
She has had a good record so far this year compared to last year I believe...

The main u/c doors have been causing trouble on the Vulcan since 1952 (first flight in fact) so it's no surprise.

I was sat on the Belsfield Hotel lawn watching it, and there was a chap next to me with a scanner and a Lancashire accent and curiosity got the better of me so I asked him if was called Rod!

Definitely not me - I'm from down south - only been in these northern parts for 20 years!
Anyway, we were on a hillock overlooking the lake - very beautiful. The show was definitely a case of quality, not quantity. From 2 to 5.15, 6 aircraft! Still, great day out.

Vulcan banked over Banbury @ 14:39 and then flew off due NE.
She is due to display at Whitehaven today....thought Whitehaven was NW?
Maybe due to do a flypast somewhere en-route...hope everything is OK...

Vulcan just this minute came back flying direclty above the road I live in...great sight to see...
Don't you just hate digital cameras with no optical viewfinders...can't even see what's in the LCD in anything that vaguely resembles sunlight...
I don't know about point & shoot...more like point & pray it's in the frame somewhere. :-(

Somewhere there's a famous conversation between a Vulcan and a USAF base in the States. It consists of an initial height clearance request, which takes a little while to be granted, followed by:
"Sorry, past that already!"
"Cleared to flight level 300"
"Past that too"
"Cleared to flight level 400"
"Past that as well"

Ever since I bought it, I've always called the SR-71 "the Sled". It's by far the best name for it.
