Radarbox usb disconnect problem
« on: August 25, 2009, 08:31:32 PM »
I would appreciate any suggestions or help with this anoying problem.

Radarbox works fine no problem for a few days then the hardware green indicator changes from green to red indicating the device is not connected to the USB port.

If i disconnect and re-connect the USB cable things work fine until it happens again.

Note:Different USB cables have been used, still with same problem.

1.All power save and sleep options in Vista have been turned off

2.Usb drivers are version 27/06/2007 version 2.2.4.0

3.Running program as administrator

4.Set exceptions in AVG when running software.

I work away from home quite a lot of the time, and remotely access the Radarbox is how i normaly use the package, but having to keep un-plug the usb port to reset the unit is a bit of a pain and not very practicial when several hundreds miles away.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

How long is your USB cable Paul? I had a similar problem which was eventually resolved by using different combinations of USB - in fact I bought a very cheap 3 mtr cable off ebay and it did the trick.

RB seems to be a bit picky about USBs.

1.All power save and sleep options in Vista have been turned off

Have you also checked the Power Management options for the USB hub(s) in Device Manager?  Untick the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

I had that problem, it was caused by turning off a flourescent desk lamp plugged into the same power bar.  Moved the plug on the desk lamp to another filtered outlet and the problem has mostly gone away.  I don't know how the surge or whatever gets through my laptop to the USB port and the Radarbox.

I was having the same problem also with my printer, I've changed the supplied USB cable with a shielded one, and I've solved all problems.

Thanks to everyone for there technical help so far.

I replaced the supplied USB cable with a Belkin cable.

So far after 3 days no USB disconnect problems.

Hope this keeps working, only time will tell.

Thanks again to everyone.

I get the same problem, have learned to live with it, but have found disconnecting the cable is not necessary.
Not sure what it is in Vista, but in XP, just going into Device Manager and disabling/re-enabling the USB device will bring it back to life. This is less of a pain for me than walking to the PC that hosts the RB.
I am currently investigating whether this soft reset can be done programmatically, and if so(should be) I will post the details.

G'Day Paul, Mine was doing the same thing It was also causing noise in my Aircraft radios here at work ,Replace your USB cable as the one supplied with the Box are rubbish they have very poor shielding causing radiation into radio etc and the data string pulses become rounded instead of square and this causes dropouts. I replaced mine and it has been fine for over 2 months now.
Geoff. P.S I have notified Airnav of this problem ,still waiting on reply.

There is no replacement unfortunately, the cables still work fine and it was only interference with other electronic applications which concerned this. These were only identified in less then a few cables.

As promised, if you suffer from this regularly enough to be an annoyance, you can run a scheduled task - say hourly, that disables then re-enables the hardware device.
You can use the Microsoft utility 'devcon' to do this, available to download from their website.
This saves time if you're RB is remote, and for example keeps the application running and emailing you when you are at work. No more wondering why those alerts have stopped only to get home and find the device in a disconnected state.

If more details are required, just ask.
