Title: Populate Query
Post by: Col on February 02, 2009, 09:08:10 PM
Hi

I have had the RB for a couple of weeks now and I am really enjoying it. This obviously coincides with the server problems so I am not 100% sure how it is all meant to work when it is all working properly.

When I go into MyLog I obviously have a number of codes which do not have tie ups. I then go to Populate and the message says that I have a number of codes have been updated and that MyLog will be refreshed when complete. The trouble is that the number being updated is constantly increasing - the number now stands at over 1,000.

The message at the bottom right of the main screen says that it is processing 1,000+ photo/info requests - I assume that this is not correct but is it related to the server problems or have I set up the system incorrectly?

Thanks

Colin

This may be tied-in to the ongoing autopopulate problems following the server rebuilds.  Maybe Airnav can clarify if autopopulate is now working fully.

1,000 unknowns sounds high, I currently have 189 unknowns, which is also quite high compared to my past experience.  This might suggest that there is still an autopopulate problem.

If its not a problem at the Airnav end, then it my be your firewall that's blocking updates.  Are ANY aircraft populated with Registration and photos?

Hi,

I had 320 when I clicked onto auto populate last night.

Mine has increased also over the last few days.

Hi

If I click on an item in the network screen which has no reg details it does populate in most cases although type is often left as "..." so I think that the firewall is not a problem.

Obviously the fact that I am a new user may explain why there is so many to populate.

Colin, yes, sounds like your firewall is NOT the problem.  I would guess that auto-populate still has some problems on the new Airnav server then.

It should be ok now, can you confirm it processing them and populating?

HI

I have just run the populate function again (on 1174 aircraft!) and having waited for the quite a while for them to be processed I then went back into MyLog and went to populate and I still had all 1174 to process. In other words nothing has changed.

I have got the same problem. I have noticed that when the populate task has been processed , it just renews my Photo files almost completly. Almost all the  photos that were already there were replaced by the same photo. When I press populate again, the process starts all over again. Again it almost completly renews my Photo files.

I had 370 to populate last night.

It took a while and when I checked later it was still at 370.

Populated my missing aircraft last night, still missing. I've just populated a blank aircraft on my log got the photo and the registration, ... for type and no other details.

I thought Airnav had said that following the server rebuilds, they needed to get GAS to re-authorise their server connections.  But I may be wrong.

Yes, but I had the impression that they contacted GAS and it was still not right.

Probably a wrongly communicated MAC address, or something similar!!!

May well be. It wouldn't surprise me if the IP address of the server changed, it may be that GAS care about that where the rest of us don't need to.

Is populate working or not ?

This lunchtime I ran Tools > Populate and 361 photos/information were downloaded. I have just done the same thing again and now I get 304 photos/information. That doesn't sound right to me.

Some of the photos that RB says it is downloading are also of aircraft that are the most common around these parts and are not new to airlines' fleets so I would expect in the year I have had RB that a photo already has been downloaded

Don't confuse the MyLog manual Populate with the auto-populate function that runs all the time in the background.  Autopopulate seems to be running OK now, with the exception that the short type still sometimes comes out as "..." which is a known bug.

See the attached jpg of my last batch of autopopulated aircraft as shown in Database Explorer.

Thanks Allocator. I understand now that if I click on a Mode-S in my flights where no registration is being displayed then this downloads a photo (or two if that option is set) and pick up the details for the aircraft in question.

Regarding the manual Populate function in MyLog I know it populates the entries in the log from NavData.db3. So today at midday I populate the log and get 361 records to be found/updated and then a matter of hours later when I do the same thing there are still over 300 records it attempts to populate. A fair number of these seem to be relating to very ordinary aircraft that are seen most days.

Incidentally it does say on the Information message that the screen will refresh when the populate has finished but I have never witnessed that happening. Is there a second step to populating the log that maybe I am not doing to 'commit' the information ?

The refresh happens automatically.  Find an aircraft in MyLog that has no details, but you know that the details have been autopopulated because you saw it being populated in the list (or you manually entered details using Database Explorer).  When you run MyLog populate, you will see the mylog list refresh and the full details will be there.

A bit difficult to demonstrate really, but hopefully you get my drift.  See the 2 attached shots of MyLog.  I've manually updated the main database using Database Explorer to put in the details of the Hawk 43C554 and the AlphaJet short names.  As soon as I use MyLog Populate, the details from NavData.dbe are populated to the MyLog list.
